Considering how much NHL talent will be in the AHL this year, I'm perfectly fine with the lockout and its effects on Nyquist, Smith, Tatar, Sheehan, and the Grand Rapids crew.

Pros: None really. GR will be good?

Cons: No hockey and Dats and Z and others are a year older.

Also, and this won't matter to most die hards like us, but it holds true; a full season lockout could bury the NHL even more amongst the national media and fair weather fans worse than the 05 lockout did. The NHL was finally gaining some steam again but if they miss another whole season those fans who just started getting into hockey again after losing interest after the last lockout might just say "**** it I'm done."

In some circles (mostly ESPN) the NHL could fall behind things like Tennis, Nascar and Golf in exposure. It already got passed by College Football and BBall after the last lockout.

Con: NHLers in Europe mean less icetime for prospects over there

It'll be interesting to see what the prospects can do with NHL talent though. ie Pulkkinen and Filppula

I think we could have a better shot for high pick by playing the season.

And I want we draft Alexander Barkov at 1st round. He would be perfect fit to our prospect core, big playmaking center that we lack the most.

How would the draft work if there's a lockout? How do they determine the picks?

The chance is so small, they seed after playoff appearences the last 3 years (i think) and number of 1st overall picks the last few years

So teams like Toronto, Minnesota etc would have the best chance

Teams like detroit, edmonton etc would not have a good chance

This is from another discussion:

2013 NHL Draft in case of Lockout

I was wondering if anybody could verify that this is how the breakdown of lottery balls would go for the 2013 draft assuming there is a lockout. I never followed the draft closely until after 2005 and despite looking it up, I still have a question: If a team was in the playoffs more than once in the past 3 years, does that mean they only get 1 ball? Because that is how I have done it below, but I am still unsure. And if there was, by some ridiculous chance, a full season lockout, do you think the NHL would go with this same method (including the snake draft)? If not, does anybody have an idea for a better system?

This is what I was going by:

The Draft Drawing, a weighted lottery system, was used to determine the order of selection for all seven rounds of the Entry Draft. Under the weighted lottery system, the clubs that neither qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in each of the 2001-02, 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons, nor were awarded the first overall selection in each of the 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 Entry Drafts, had the greatest chance of receiving the first overall selection, 6.3 per cent.

The Oilers are the only team to have picked first overall in these past 3 years, so the Islanders have 3 balls.
3 balls: 8 teams with a 5.88% chance at first overall
Dallas
Calgary
Winnipeg
Toronto
New York Islanders
Minnesota
Columbus
Carolina

2 balls: 5 teams with a 3.92% chance at first overall
Florida
Tampa Bay
St. Louis
Colorado
Anaheim

1 ball: 17 teams with a 1.96% chance at first overall
Edmonton
Washington
Philadelphia
New York Rangers
Boston
New Jersey
Ottawa
Buffalo
Vancouver
Phoenix
Nashville
Detroit
Chicago
San Jose
Los Angeles
Montreal
Pittsburgh

Total balls: 51

So because our success in latest years, we would have quite high position in this "lottery" draft.

But if we would play a normal or shortened season and if we would suck, we should have better changes for higher draft picks. I see it that way.

All I know is the last time (the Sidney Crosby Sweepstakes) each team was assigned a number of balls (1 to 3) based on past playoff appearances over a set period of time. There may have been something else that wend into it, but draft order was set as balls were selected. The second round then snaked back from 30 to 1, instead of resetting like normal. The Wings drafted 19 that year, despite winning the President's trophy the last full year of play.

Don't know if they would change it in the next CBA, but I don't see a reason to switch it up. A guy can dream, right?

my greatest fear is we have a shortened season because that will let a bunch of crapy teams in that happen to be on a roll. For example last season mn was the best team at one point but as the season went on they faded. Having a full season makes sure the good teams that consistantly play will be the playoffs.

I'm not entirely sure that's something we should fear this season.

What about the WC game? Would they just push that to next year?

I would think that people who bought tickets should be able to get a refund as well since the game wouldnt happen, right?

We lose the last year of Nyquist and Smith's ELC contracts. Just thought of that.

Yeah, but what does that mean in your opinion? Positive or negative thing?

BTW, Rick Nash scored 3+0 and Joe Thornton 0+4 at their Swiss league season debut. Same league, Damien Brunner scores 2+0 in his season debut. Not bad.

Pros: Bert and Sammy retire instead of coming back for the last year of their contract...
