Want to know who to blame? Blame everybody. The players and the owners both have made a circus out of this. No other sport, no matter how contentious the negotiations, have ever been as content to lock out of games.

Bettman coming out and saying "we'll recover, we have the best fans in the world", is much like a drug dealer coming out and saying "we have the best junkies in the neighborhood", because the weasel KNOWS that the vast majority of us couldn't tune out if we wanted to tune out. NHL fans are a rare breed.

Salaries are as high as they've ever been, revenue is as high as it has ever been.... what are we fighting about? A few percentage points one way or the other? Please. Call it down the middle and own all this faux shoulder shrugging about who's fault it is.

While I mostly agree, "a few percentage points" is hundreds of millions of dollars. Though neither side really needs the money that's being debated over, it's still a significant amount worthy of debate.

But yeah, both sides pandering to the fans is getting real old, real fast.

It's difficult to side with anyone in this debacle. It was a lot easier to side with the players in the NFL because they don't have guaranteed contracts (and didn't ask to get them) and wanted more done for player safety and post retirement benefits. Obviously money was still the biggest issue but at least they gave an appearance of caring about something else.

The NHL squabble is about money, a lot of it, but still just money. The gap is about 200 million. If they meet in the middle it's 3.3 million per owner less than they want, and 133,333 per player less than they want. Obviously those are just averages, but in the grand scheme of things it sure doesn't seem like that big of a gap, given how much money the people involved have.

Well with apparently no new talks scheduled all lip service about wanting to do everything possible to get a deal done for the fans is just that, lip service. The lockout is here so the posturing can stop. Both sides have tin ears, but couldn't the NHLPH at least make a counter to the last owner's offer? This is just ridiculous. /rant off.

I would think a terribly marginal player, at best, like BizNasty, would realize without the fans, they have no future. He should be one of the players that realizes his NHL tenure could end at pretty much anytime.

But they know that almost all the fans will come crawling back, no matter how ****** things get, or how long things go on.

I would like to say that I am done with the NHL if they lose another season. The fact is, though, I would be full of crap if I said that. I'm too obsessed with this team and the league. I am pondering a more realistic vow, however, such as if a season is lost I will not spend a single cent on NHL-related purchases for the entire season after. That would mean no attending games, no merchandise, no Center Ice/Gamecenter Live, etc.

Not that I really think there is much chance of a full season lockout at this point, but I need to come up with something here to make myself feel a bit more empowered.

If you can ignore the fact that it's a player putting all the blame on the owners again, this is a pretty good read as to a huge difference in PoV between the two sides.

The players want to increase revenue sharing from 150mil to 260mil, with the additional 110mil going directly to the six or seven teams (so, about 15-20 mil per team) that need it the most. They believe that additional 110mil should come from some of the league richest teams (Toronto, New York, Montreal, etc). According to the article, the Leafs put in 20mil into revenue sharing last year, about 10% of their total revenue. If revenue sharing changes in the way of the other leagues (MLB, NBA, NFL), the number for richer teams would be 31% or higher. So to save the Phoenixes of the league, the Leafs (and other richer teams) would put in another 40mil into revenue sharing.

The owners want to increase revenue sharing from 150mil to 190mil, keeping the same distribution of the current sharing plan. They believe the additional 40mil should come directly from the players, which is why they're asking the players to take a cut from 57% to 47% in HRR. The concerns, obviously, are that the owners are simply going to do the same thing again in 6-7 years, when this cut still isn't enough to sustain the smaller markets, because large portions of the revenue sharing plan are still going to the teams that don't need the help.

I don't think there was a lockout in 2006, so that should be fine

Ugh, can't tell if you misunderstood my post and actually think that I think the lockout was in 2006, or if you're just joking around.

I've already watched several playoff replays on NHL Network (which I actually have now).

I'm the problem.

That's gotta be it. I hate to say it, but you're not welcome around these parts anymore.

Just kidding. You can stay. If you bake me cookies.

Oh, I'm just tired at this point. Let's get the season going here. Everyone's pissed off at no one in particular and it's manifesting itself as being pissed off at actual posters. There's nothing to talk about, unless we want to have an 847th conversation about Bettman and the players not getting anything done. Might as well keep it fun...

Let's fake it, by all somehow figuring out a way to simulate a season on NHL13. We could make a few GDT's, and post scores//highlights//trades and such. I can record game footage from my PS3 and could upload it to youtube or something to.

Yo with this NHL 13 GM Connected app, we can totally have our own season just here...
