I'm pretty sure that the June start date is based on the final submission of revenue figures from all the NHL teams, that will determine the salary cap for next season. A few months ago the numbers that were reported in the media were based on revenue projections. The teams management know that they need those numbers before they can formally start negotiating with their own players. I'll hazard a guess that none of the Montreal media at today's press conference thought to ask more specifics about the June date.
In the mean time, I'm sure that Bob Gainey, Andre Savard & Brisebois [Habs "capologist"] & other Habs braintrust will be hard at work to try and determine who they want to stay and who will go.
Yep, I agree with you. Mey will be all about evaluation and planning of what to do next.
Savard will probably spend time on the draft though, with Timmins and his team, but I'm not sure Geiney gets very involved in this stuff.
-> To answer the person that believed May will be all about draft plans.
Then, when the evaluation has been properly done, Gainey can start negotiating with his FA he wants to come back. And eventually getting ready for draft day dealing if he has assets to deal or if he's targetting a non-UFA player.
Finally, July will be the time to add one or two UFAs (not including some for Hamilton). Don't expect more than last year though...
What I think we need is a Brind'Amour/Nieuwendyk type of guy down the middle. A bit younger though...
I would welcome another puck-moving defenseman, but I wouldn't mind keeping the same 6D core either.
If we can't find the required player down the middle, a guy like Langenbrunner would more than do the trick for me.

I would mind keeping the same 6D core. We've been saying all year long that if something happens to Markov, we're screwed. How can this be different next year. Even though he played much better in the playoffs, I'm still not sold on Dandenault. And Souray could be involved in a trade as well, though I'm not too sure about that. 'Cause one of our offence problems, are directly related with the transition game that our D'S do not have. First passes come from Markov, and that's about it. We need puck moving d-men surely 1, maybe 2.
A certain coach on the Habs has a LW son-in-law that will be UFA after next season. He'd be a great fit. Maybe something could be worked out sooner than that.

I agree, when Markov missed time we were a bad bad team. I'd much rather have a number 1 or 2 d-man and demote a top 4 to a top 6 and demote Bouillon or whoever else to 7th D.
Offensively I think we just need to cut the dead weight rather than get a superstar. A consistent center would be sweet though. Langenbrunner sounds really good to me.

Hmm, that's right. It's just that our D seems to fit well together, just like a 6-pack.
But, yep, we shouldn't forget how it is exposed when Markov is missing. And even more than when Koivu is missing, if we focuse on the "in the game or blown out" factor, not only the W/L results...
I wouldn't like overpayment though, and a guy paid around the same amount as Koivu/Kovalev would be the limit.

I guess that's a pretty simple formula when you think about it...2 good D....2 good centermen...
TQS (Le grand journal)is now all over Koivu for not speaking french (it seems they really focused on the fact that Koivu did not speak a word in french at the press conference) and are telling people that we should do something about it and not act like "colonized" people.

God... I hate medias
I distinctly heard him use the words Le Journal de Montreal in a French accent. That counts!!
Who cares? They have ball bearings rattling around in their half-filled brain cages. The posters who relay their ravings to this forum should know better.
You won't have anybody taking Bonk from us. We'll have to buy him out....
Bonk had a bad year...especially when you take the 2.39M salary into the equation...Theo had an awful year and BG was able to get someone to bite on a 5.3M cap hit...so it is possible that BG could get someone to take Bonk off of our hands...that being said, BG was much more impressed with Bonk as the year went on, and Carbo was very happy with his PK...and it's only one more year at the dreadful 2.39M...Unfortunately, I think Bonk stays...
poor guy has to answer stupid questions like why he doesn't speak french
I think he should learn to say, "That's a pretty stupid question. I'm not addressing it again. Next." in French. That would be excellent. His response, however, was quite to the point and far more diplomatic.
He was asked about Koivu not speaking french. His answer was funny: His wife speaks very well... If Koivu spends more time with his wife, he will do ok!
Was that a Rejean Tremblay question?
And you wonder why this team hasn't made it past the second round in almost 15 years... The political pundits are more concerned with what language the captain speaks than whether he plays good hockey. It would be all very nice for him to learn french but at the end of the day he is a hockey player, not a politician. Do these guys have a short a memory or what? Do they not remember that it was less than a couple of weeks ago when Koivu went down and this team completely collapsed without him.
I've got a good idea. Let's make Ribeiro captain. There. Now we'll satisfy the poltiicians and never win a cup.
