Wow. Edmonton blows the field goal, but convert to the fire drill. Not a cheap one either, the receiver had to run someone over to get into the end zone.

Sigh, and I thought the afternoon start would help. What a disaster of a game after a decent start.

Argos back in 1st as a result of the games today.

Paul Lapolice is laughing in front of his TV today at that Winnipeg performance.

So poor coaching decides two of four games on the weekend...and I wasn't even able to watch the other two. This is about par for the course, unfortunately.

The Bombers are pretty pathetic this year, what a difference a year makes.

They were pretty pathetic in the 2nd half of the regular season last year too, posting a 3-7 record. And the Alouettes completely choked away a game to give them 1 of those 3 wins late in the year in WPG.

Wherever LaPolice is, he's got a big grin on his face I would think. Two monumental blowouts and a third game where the new coach blew the game late.

Huge game in the Hammer today. Cats will start to fall out of the playoff picture with a loss, while Edmonton would go into full scale meltdown mode with a 3rd consecutive loss. Neither team can afford a loss.

Ti-Cats with a blowout win. Lots of blowouts in the league recently.

Might be time for the Kavis Reed era to end in Edmonton. Never imagined I'd be saying that even a month ago. The Eskimos are getting outcoached so badly it's not even funny, and it gets exponentially worse each game. This season has unravelled at breakneck speed. Reminds me of the Alouettes in 2001. Arguably the best team in the league at Labour Day, and then the bottom fell out and they failed to win another game that season. The Eskimos and Bombers may both have already won their last football games of the year.

Eskimos fans blamed the lack of offense on Ricky Ray for the last few years so he must also be smiling in Toronto right now.

At least Ray is a legit starter in this league.Joseph is a has-been and Jyles a never was.

I don't think Reed is the problem. Its pretty hard to look like a good coach when your offence couldn't score against a free hooker. Tillman is obviously the problem. He traded a top 2 qb in the league for a terrible quicker and a terrible qb, and then lost a 1000 yard receiver to free agency. Its quite obvious Tillman is at fault for this. Suddenly my 5-13 prediction doesn't look so bad.

Tillman has provided excellent personnel in almost all positions. There are no weaknesses at all on the defensive side of the ball. The receiving corps is more than adequate, and Reed has not one, not two, but THREE capable running backs at his disposal. The only suspect positions are QB and the O-line. They were both problematic last year, and the team managed 11-7. No reason the shouldn't have matched that record this year.

People love to blame Jyles and Joseph, and make no mistake, they have not been good enough. But there are few if any losses that it can be said Ray would have won the game had he been at QB instead. The last three losses are 100% on the coaching staff. Edmonton gets outcoached by increasingly large margins as the season has gone on.

Despite clearly being built as a run-first team, the Eskimos do not run at all. No effort to establish a running game in any game they've lost this year. When the Eskimos rush at least 20 times, they're pretty much undefeated the last two seasons, but Crandall and Reed refuse to run the ball. It makes no sense at all.

Time count violations, procedure calls, illegal formations, too many men calls have plagued them for a month now. These penalties are coaching problems. We had two kickers on the field at one point yesterday. We had 0 on an attempted punt later on. On the idiotic 3rd and 2 gamble on our own 20, everyone on the field was confused and had no idea what to do since the play didn't get signalled in until the play clock was down to 5 seconds.

We have a kicker with a leg to hit 60 yard field goals, but have repeatedly punted from less than 50 this year. Return men have received no instruction of whether or not to run balls out of the endzone on kickoffs and punts at crucial times this year. We traded for a new punter (this was stupid on Tillman's part), and instead continued to use Shaw on punts and threw the new guy out for a long FG on a whim. We've dressed 4 running backs for a game and gave them each two carries.

Coaching has been a complete and utter disaster during the last five games. Both losses to Calgary that have proven to be the turning point in the season can be placed squarely on the shoulders of Marcus Crandell and Kavis Reed. Crandell should have been gone last year. Reed chose to keep his incompetent buddy around, and AFAIC they can both get the gas at this point.

That 5-13 prediction was looking pretty stupid when the team was 5-3....but you may yet prove correct, that's how unbelievably inept this team looks. But I disagree on who the main problem has been between Tillman, Reed, and the players.

Ray has proven to be an upgrade over what Toronto had the last few years, but if you remove the games against the Ti-Cats and their abysmal defense, he's barely averaged over 20 points per game. The Argos defense, easily the best in the East so far, and Chad Owens have been the biggest reasons for their winning record. Until Ray caught fire in the 4th quarter on Labour Day, people were starting to have serious doubts about his ability to lead the Argos sputtering offense, which had scored a paltry 4 TDs in the last 17 quarters. Credit to Ray for turning it around against Hamilton, but I'd expect it'll be back to relying on the defense to hold opponents to 20 points or less when the Argos face Montreal and Saskatchewan in the coming weeks.

Nearly 2/3s of the way through the season and it's pretty clear who the pretenders are. That would be:

1)Winnipeg
2)Hamilton
3)Edmonton
4)Saskatchewan

Expect the Grey Cup to be contended by:

1)West - BC or Calgary
2)East - Montreal or Toronto

I'll go with the safe pick myself. Montreal vs. BC for the 100th Grey Cup.

Very safe indeed ;]. Actually Montreal looked pretty pedestrian today.

Holy hell, Winnipeg with an easy win against Hamilton. Hamilton is now 4-8 despite a ton of talent.

Being able to kick 60 yards means nothing if you can't kick straight. The bottom line is Shaw sucks. He single handedly lost 2 games with his inability to make a field goal at the end of the game.

Talent is there but they arent a cohesive team. Cortez needs to go, Fantuz is over rated and Stala needs to see more playing time.

Watched the second half of the Eskimos - BC game. BC should have won the game by more than 1 point (and only on a last minute successful field goal at that) if not for McCallum's poor kicking and a receiver with a case of fumblitis inside the Eskies 10 yard line on a good drive.

Edmonton had 4 first downs in the second half and maybe 100 total yards offense. BC's defense showed up in the second half and dominated and Jyles was Jyles failing to find a way to win in the final minute. That last pass by him on third down was - no one even in the vicinity. In the end, the best team in the league won..barely.

Edmonton's only hope for third in the West is the continued putrid play of the Roughriders. Saskatchewan isn't playing Winnipeg anymore this year so there is always hope Esks fans!

Shaw has done fine. He'll be a starter in this league for years to come. The miss on the LD Rematch was bad, but there's so many other, bigger problems with this team. Shaw hits 60 yarders in warm up. It's flat out dumb to punt from inside 50. Most of those punts result in singles, which is the worst case scenario on a FG attempt anyway. Dumb has unfortunately become the middle name of Kavis Reed this season.
