Marleau can also play center, that always adds to his value. He is also still one of the fastest players in the game. I would love to have him as an Oiler, but I have no idea what the asking price would be.
Hemsky, 1st 2013.
I think Hemsky would mesh well with SJs style, and the trade back of salary wouldn't hurt the Oilers as much. SJ is also pretty bare on the RW.
The sharks would also get a pick in a very deep talented draft.
If you forget about the NMC then his value would be immense. There aren't many left wingers in this game that can put up 30+ goals, play as well as him defensively, and have the versatility to play with different players either at wing or center and still succeed. He's not dependent on anyone to score.
With the NMC, I couldn't tell you what his value is because nobody really knows where he'd want to play if it wasn't San Jose. I would guess that Calgary and Winnipeg might be on there as well as maybe LA, Anaheim, Colorado, and possibly Minnesota. If all those teams were on that list then maybe you can get decent value but if it's just say three teams then his return won't be that great.
You can't really generalize it and say he'll return a younger forward and this and that. It's going to be dependent on what teams he is willing to go to and what they have because if the Sharks are open to trading Marleau, they're going to have to take whoever the best young asset is that they're being offered whether it's a forward, d-man, or a goalie as they will need all of them when that eventual rebuild hits.

I don't know much about Hemsky, but on the surface he's had injuries and pretty poor numbers. Hemsky also isn't that young at 29. I think I'd want someone younger or more proven then this guy. And his salary hit seems way to high.
If he had more seasons like 2007–08 maybe, but as of right now, pass.
What's Marleau's value? What do the Sharks want for him? I know he has a NTC, but let's forget about that.
His traits:
-Good defensive player
-Good 2nd line winger
-Good shot
Would this be going into somewhat of a rebuild mode?
I would do Hodgson, Leino, Leopold, Adam, Brennen, and a first for Thornton and Marleau
I know I'm gonna get crap for Leino but he would have to be included to make enough cap. That's also why I added Brennen. So 3 top prospects, A good Dman that they can release after next year if they wish, and Leino with a first. Great rebuild package if you ask me.

Terribad. If Buffalo wanted to try to compete now and the Sharks wanted to blow up their core and rebuild, the return for those players would have actually include some of our best prospects, not B listers like Adam and Brennan. (Think Grigorenko, Armia, Pysyk...Quality young players.)
That said, I'd rather wait it out with our kids and (hopefully, if enough pan out) be competitive for many years, rather than trade them for guys who might only have a few prime years left.
Edit: I think Buffalo and SJS could make good trade partners for a "shake up" trade if both teams decide they want to change the look of the team without blowing everything up though. Like maybe Vanek for Marleau? Maybe a small + either way if it needs to be evened out.
He has put up 30 + goals in 6 of the last 7 years.
He has averaged 34 goals a year over that 7 year span.
He has averaged 72pts a season over the last 7 years.
He is one of the fastest skaters in the game.

The Sharks would want forwards, not defensemen for him right? If that's the case, I'm not even going to bother putting up a Devils proposal because they are terrible partners.

This trade wouldn't be a huge shocker at the deadline if Hemsky has a decent season and stays healthy. Hemsky as of now is in great shape. He had 8 points in 9 games at the Worlds. He also had his 1st NHL hat trick in one of the final games of the season. And at this point, he is younger than Havlat and probably healthier.
His salary also seems to be the going rate for top 6 forwards. Havlat is actually a good comparable.
