Since we're all talking about Magic Numbers and now is as appropriate time as any to post this...

"According to CSNBayArea.com, Melky Cabrera has pulled himself out of contention for the National League batting title.

In an unprecendented agreement between Major League Baseball and the players' union, Cabrera will be ruled ineligible to win the award after testing positive for testosterone in August. Cabrera is currently serving a 50-game suspension."

http://www.mercurynews.com/giants/ci...-batting-title

He also said he has "no wish to win an award that would be tainted," and that he felt "it would be far better for someone more deserving to win."

Funny thing is, a Giant might still win it. Buster is batting .335, Cutch is at .339.

It still boggles my mind that Cabrera would be eligible to play in the playoffs.

Buster needs to win every title there is in baseball. He is God. Cutch is juicing.

Would be awesome if Posey took it. I think this is Melky's way of trying to make amends with the Giants organization, in the hopes that if the Giants go far enough in the playoffs, they'll let him play. Dunno if that'll happen though.

While Melky's actions are commendable at face, this does very little to repair what he did do and the lengths his was willing to go. He shouldn't win the batting title, but this isn't the way to do things. Besides that, I doubt the selflessness Melky is trying to portray with his actions are genuine. He is still looking out for himself. If he was really sorry he would've addressed the team before bolting to do whatever he was in such a hurry to do.

The revisionism that the MLB is playing with is getting really dangerous here. On top of that, it was initiated by a player who probably has ulterior motives... Don't like the precedence this is setting on multiple fronts.

Thought this was a pretty funny crossover topic…

49ers (-7) over VIKINGS

Q: When we get the inevitable Harbaugh Bowl this February, can we all petition to have them both move back to their parents' house during media week, and then have HBO film it 24/7 style?
—Kamal G., San Diego

SG: I love this idea almost as much as I love the thought of Jack Harbaugh stealing commercials away from Archie Manning. Besides, the words "have HBO film it 24/7 style" have never led to a bad place — I'd even watch a 24/7 series promoting a celebrity boxing match between Chad Johnson and Terrell Owens, two top-five picks in any "Sports Figures Who Just Need to Go Away" fantasy draft.

(The first round, in case you were wondering: Gary Bettman, Roger Clemens, Roger Goodell, Chad Johnson, Terrell Owens, James Dolan, Lance Armstrong, every former cycling teammate of Lance Armstrong, Bob Bowman, and Gary Bettman a second time because he should count twice.)

I hope the Giants clinch this weekend and then they can kind of rest their players (Posey, Pegan, maybe some of the pitchers) more so they will be fresh for the postseason. I don't think they are going to catch the Reds for best record, so that's kind of pointless.

Will be at the Giants/DBags game on Wednesday with some guys from work, was hoping we might be able to see them clinch but it seems that will happen before Wednesday's game

Watching the Quakes game. SJ scores early against the Flounders in Seattle.

Simon Dawkins is a beast with a missile goal early on.

Happy for the Giants.

Hope the Quakes get their 3rd MLS cup. I wouldn't want to play them. Wondo is king.

It'll depress me if so much bay area success occurs but no hockey season

Of course the Niners are looking good too

Very happy the Giants clinched this early. Love that all the "experts" who kept trying to brainwash us all throughout the season that the final series vs. LA was *definitely* going to be for the division were 100% wrong. It's great.

Also, hoping from now until the end of the regular season the Giants just coast. I know some people don't like hearing that, but with this season's 2-3 division series (it's only for this season, so this strategy only applies this year), it is to the Giants advantage to be the #3 seed and open up at home to Cincy/Wash instead of going on a tear and one of those two flop and then all of the sudden it's 1997 all over again with the Giants being division champions/higher seed but opening on the road.

In a best of 5 series, those first two are much more important than the first 2 in a best of 7, and since this season only baseball will go with the 2-3 format, the Giants should want the 3 seed. Not to mention, now you can figure out who will fill out the playoff roster, give some of the callups more playing time, and set your rotation for the playoffs.
