Hawks buget next year $35 million-$36 million

It’s going to be interesting to see how this off-season shakes out for the Blackhawks, considering there won’t be a huge boost in payroll, according to general manager Dale Tallon.

During a conference call with reporters Wednesday from Sweden, where he is on a scouting trip, Tallon estimated the Hawks’ payroll for the 2006-07 season would be about $35 million-$36 million.

The Hawks’ payroll to start this season was approximately $32.5 million, with the NHL’s salary cap at $39 million. It’s expected the cap will be raised to about $42 million next season.

“I think we’ve got enough room (in the budget) to get what we need and be competitive,” Tallon said. “We should have 7-to-9 million (dollars) to spend (in free agency).”

Assuming the Hawks spend $9 million, will that be enough to get what they want, which is two top-six forwards, a defenseman to quarterback the power play and a veteran backup goalie? You wouldn’t think so.

“We’ll have some flexibility in there,” Tallon insisted.

The Hawks already have a shade under $19 million in salary committed for next season with a substantial number of restricted free agents to sign, including Tuomo Ruutu, Mark Bell, Kyle Calder, Radim Vrbata, Patrick Sharp, Rene Bourque, Mark Cullen, Duncan Keith and Jim Vandermeer.

Even if those nine players signed for minimal raises from what they made this season, it could push the payroll up about another $9 million to $28 million.

Tallon also expects to sign several players out of Europe, likely Finnish defenseman Lasse Kukkonen and Finnish left winger Tony Salmelainen, which would add another $1 million-plus in payroll.

And if rookie defenseman Cam Barker makes the club out training camp, another $3 million in his salary and potential bonuses would count against the Hawks’ cap number.

Signing an unrestricted free agent such as New Jersey center Patrik Elias alone could cost the Hawks in the neighborhood of $5 million.

Tallon admitted that organizational talks would be held in May about possibly buying out the contracts of some veterans. Defenseman Jassen Cullimore and forwards Curtis Brown and Matthew Barnaby are candidates for buyouts, which would give the Hawks only minimal salary cap relief.

“We’ve discussed it and, yes, there’s some interest in maybe doing it, but we haven’t decided yet,” Tallon said.

There’s a chance Tallon would trade to help plug the necessary holes. If that were to happen, don’t rule out center Mark Bell being offered in a package. Bell’s inconsistent play has frustrated the organization.

“We have a lot of draft picks and a lot of prospects, so we could package something,” Tallon said.

Tallon agreed with coach Trent Yawney that the Hawks have only a handful of top-six forwards, naming by name Ruutu, Calder and Vrbata.

“And Bell had a good year,” Tallon said. “Salmelainen could be a top-six forward, definitely a seven, eight or nine — Sharp and Bourque, too. I like the model that Buffalo has, three lines that are all about the same.”

Tallon gave high marks to Yawney for his first season behind the bench and indicated that assistants Denis Savard and Bruce Cassidy would return.

“(Trent) did a solid job,” Tallon said. “A lot of things he had no control over, the injuries, and through it all he kept his composure, he kept him confidence, the players respected him a great amount and worked hard for him all the way through.”

It's all well and good to like the Buffalo model with three even lines, but you need gamebreakers in there. Maybe Rutuu is that kind of player, maybe not. I like a team being able to roll 4 lines as much as the next guy, but if its 4 lines of career third-liners you've got some issues. You need that guy that can just take a game by the scruff of the neck and carry the team.

Bolland is still in the playoffs so they cant sign him. I believe their other remaining OHL prospects are as well. You can count on a couple of them being qualified by June 1.

do you think Daze would accept a contract from the canucks

one year 800,0000 two way deal
if he plays more than 75 games in a season, he will be paid 1 million
if he plays more than 75 games and have more than 55 points, he will be paid 2 million

A 2-way deal would be a slap in the face.

In winter time Tallon(?) was spending time in Europe and watching players to sign, one of the players was Jari Viuhkola so does Hawks have any plans signing Viuhkola? Viuhkola played again very stongly at spring time and will perhaps be Team Finlands' first line center in WHC in Latvia.

by the way, Hawks players in playoffs in FNL:

2. Lasse Kukkonen 11 5+7 +6
6. Jari Viuhkola 11 2+8 +5
27. Tony Salmelainen 12 4+2 -2
56. Petri Kontiola 6 1+3 -2
93. Olli Malmivaara 8 1+0 +4

Sorry if i forgot someone. And by the way Lasse Kukkonen was selected as a best D of the year. Will also play in WHC in Latvia.

Great update. Nice that the hawks have all these finnish skaters, but if they wanted the best bang for their buck they would have a few finish goalie prospects as well, as they seem to be goldmines right now
