Biggest winner with NHL lockout?

There are many options available in the NA to fill the hockey vacuum: where will your eyes/wallet end up?

Last lockout coincided with a large upsurge in viewership of online poker.
I think MMA probably also benefited a bit, as did the NFL in Canada (I know that I personally became a more involved pigskin fan the last labour dispute). Any predictions on where hockey fans will get there fix?

Will the divorce rate increase or decrease, as a result of the lock-out?

(Looked for another thread to place this in)

Nobody wins. It has zero-effect on other sports I think and a negative effect for everyone involved.

Incorrect. I believe TV ratings as well as attendance increased for every major sport (NBA, MLB, NFL) in the states during the last lock out.

There's probably just so many die-hards on this site that I forgot that casual "fans" exist.

There will be a lot more losers than winners. People will still spend their entertainment budget, maybe by going to junior or AHL games, possibly by going to movies or out drinking. Businesses that rely on the post-game crowds will be hurting for sure.

I'm hitting up a Giants/Seahawks game on the 12th of October when I'm in town. I'll probably be following the G-Men and the Chicago Wolves pretty closely this year.

In Vancouver.. the Whitecap should see a boost for their last 4 home games...
I went to the Edm game during the summer and now going to one of the last 4 (at least) which i wouldn't of otherwise...
a couple of Lions games now... altho that would of likely otherwise anyways.

So locally - Whitecaps.. Lions.

Giants also stand to see an increase like 8 yrs ago... but not for me at this point.

You mean Thunderbirds I think, right? I'm pretty spot-on with NFL schedule.

Yes, I meant Thunderbirds. Oops.

On another note, really dug the Giants' 3rd jerseys last night. Pretty slick. Too bad their goaltending was atrocious.

KHL. Croatia gets a team next season, time to get ready.

And Sportsnet is now streaming all kinds of Euro football for $20/month.

ratings continued to go up for these sports. NHL lock means very little to other sports.

What does spending your time on something else during the lockout have to do with being a die-hard or casual fan?

I'd expect the same thing to happen among die-hards.

I certainly won't be watching other sports instead, though.

I'm not much of a paying customer so there will be no other 'winner' as far as I go, but I noticed The Penthouse downtown doing a nice bit of advertising as their sign says they're offering therapy to cure lockout blues.

Some die-hards will watch other sports, a lot will watch European hockey, AHL hockey, CHL hockey, play beer-league hockey.

Unless we have different opinions on what classify "die-hards" as "die-hards". It's in a name. 'die-hard' as in the people that will fill any void with hockey, the people who live hockey.

Not to say that people who watch other sports aren't die-hards, but if the NHL loses some fans to other sports then they never were die-hards. Fans of sports will continue to be fans of sports, they will find time to fit all their favourite sports in their schedule, lockout or no lockout.

Year long lockout, 30 team draft lottery, Canucks pick #2 overall.

Lions, Whitecaps, Giants... the Heat?

AHL teams will probably see more of a following and increased exposure.

Hey, at least the Canucks will be President's Trophy winners for 3 years running!

If there's a year long lockout here's to hoping Vancouver, by some miracle, gets to pick first.
