Anyone else get a chuckle out of the mental image of guys in $3K suits - wearing white makeup, round red noses and big floppy shoes - conducting meetings with each other?

(Hey, you have to find the humor where you can in this situation...)

NHL's HRR meeting just broke up. Steve Fehr says there was no discussion about the CBA.

Is it true that the deal that gave us the 05/06 season was worse than the potential 04/05 deal that could have saved the 04/05 season?

I'm sorry, but both parties are just plain stupid. How could you meet about last years finances and not discuss a new CBA? I'm a huge hockey fan, but now I'm getting annoyed beyond repair. Its coming to the point where I will move on to a different league or sport.

Bill Daly says the league is waiting for the NHLPA to come forward with another proposal for CBA talks to resume.

For no games to be missed, they need a deal by this weeekend. October 11 is the start of the season. Even this weekend isn't enough time. Need to put deal on paper and then ratify. They could push back the start of the season and make up the missed games. All of this is a longshot.

Isn't the difference between formal or informal talks the presence/absence of a third party mediator?

The sides cant even agree on what HRR related is. Thats the foundation for the rest of the conversation.

That's exactly why they should be meeting -- they aren't going to define any terms by sitting around.

That's what makes me the most mad, not even that they can't agree, but that they refuse to try.

The two sides did meet, and they discussed hockey-related revenue.

Not sure what you're upset about, other than looking for a reason to get more upset over this stuff.

The meeting today wasn't to discuss the new CBA, it was to discuss last year's HRR.

In the latest NHL proposal, they had the HRR the same as it was in the previous CBA so the two sides should be on the same page there.

The discussion was about last year's revenue -- nothing was related to a new CBA or trying to find common ground to schedule a new meeting time. I'm upset that both sides are acting like children and not speaking about what's most important.

The owner's won big last time and if Bettman can pull off another big win--he'll be golden. I don't know what is so hard to understand. It's a tactic used against unions all the time--only this one is much larger scale at least as far as employee compensation. The league is prepared to lockout if the players don't knuckle under--it's as simple as that and as far as HRR--get the other side to accept your numbers as the starting point--doesn't matter whether they're inaccurate.

Truth is...NHL pursuing a lockout strategy from day 1. Lockout players to soften them up, then watch em fold.

NHL believes it will get a much better deal by locking players out than negotiating in good faith.

Mike Francesa might have Don Fehr on tomorrow. They are hoping for tomorrow. It depends on Fehr's schedule. Mike and Chris would always have Fehr on when MLB had their labor battles. Fehr's #2 was Gene Orza and he was also a frequent guest of Mike and Chris. Mike said Gary Bettman will come on after Fehr. It might not be the same day but Bettman won't let Fehr have the last word. Bettman and Fehr are at a NHL Alumni dinner tonight in Toronto honoring Brad Park. Glen Sather will probably be there representing the Rangers.

Francesa said he spoke with some of the hockey people he knows and they told him January. It could be a while. Francesa spoke to the Garden people he knows or with some of the NHL people like Dellapina and/or Frank Brown.

Daly says a new proposal from the NHLPA would spark talks. The last offer was tabled by the league on Sept. 12.

The sides have yet to restart negotiations since the lockout started nine days ago, but Daly says he and commissioner Gary Bettman expect to touch base with NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr during an alumni dinner on Monday night.

Daly says the league is "100 per cent committed" to not missing regular-season games and wants talks to resume soon.
