I'm just wondering, why is Wolski so hated? 5th team in 2 years, and he's not even that bad. I didn't think he was that bad in NY, I was surprised when he passed through waivers unclaimed. And now a 600k deal. The only other 1st round picks I see in this kind of situation are Zack Kassian and Daigle.

"Promised" is a stronger word than even Wolski has used. And Wolski himself has acknowledged that he's at a crossorads in his career, and he has to perform well just to stay in the NHL, let alone earn himself a top six spot. And even if Wolski sticks in the top six, it's not out of the question to ask Troy Brouwer or Marcus Johansson to accept a bottom six role if the team were to acquire a legit top six winger.

More like top-6 or AHL. He wasn't guaranteed an NHL spot, it was just obvious that he wouldn't be used in a bottom 6 role.

basic logic. if you look at the swiftness and ease that european players have almost seamlessly moved into non nhl mode, it looks like lots of pre planning had been made by both the players and european league teams. that would indicate lots of early warning that this was coming.

agents are well informed by the nhlpa and its my view that they were well aware that a full nhl unlikely and that a completely lost season was possible.

we know george mcphee. had the kid agreed to come over mcphee would have insisted that he play in the ahl. he would have refused and the result would have been unnecessary stress. you all know this is true.

this move is all the way better for kuzntesov and so far he has missed nothing in the nhl.

wolski is going to play a top 6 role, but i dont think he is even guaranteed a sweater for game #1.

i am pretty sure he is skating top6 if he's skating, but might just as likely be scratched.

mathieu perreault has also been told his play will be top 6, but the caps have backstrom and robeiro.

Stafford and Laich I guess you could say are equal in value though Laich's contract is a bit worse though he plays a more premier position. Also if you watched any of the last games last year, breaking up stafford, ennis, foligno for anything short of overpayment is crazy.

Then we move on to Adam(albeit with a horrid second half) was still what, 2 years removed from ahl rookie of the year and 1 year removed from making the rookies all star squad, giving up on him for a guy who was essentially a freebee this offseason in Wolski is nutty.

Plus, next season when the sabres have Ennis,Hodgson,Grigorenko, Girgensons, McCormick etc under contract where exactly does Laich go? Even if Ennis goes back to wing allowing Hodgson-Grig-Girgensons-4th line scrapper(or Cody McCormick) that still leaves you giving up stafford and adam just to move Laich to wing along with Ennis, not too mention you now have vanek, pominville, ennis, laich, foligno, armia, leino,o tt,tropp, kaleta, gerbe etc on wing competing for 8 spots...

When he was signed for $600k? I doubt he was even promised he would play in the NHL.

Uhh... no...

And none of your post actually explains that Kuz stayed because of the lockout. He decided in May/June... long before the lockout was seen as even a possibility. The reasons he stayed were stated and obvious from the get go.

The lockout was seen as a possibility well before May/June. At the very latest you could have seen it coming was in January when the NHLPA refused to sit down and discuss the CBA with the owners. This has been looming on the horizon for a long time.

Not that I agree with txpd's statement that Kuz stayed away because of the lockout or that McPhee would have wanted him to play in the AHL.

Hell, there were warning signs as far back as December. Remember when the NHL came up with a realignment plan without consulting the players, and the NHLPA then swatted it down for no other reason than that? Anyway, I feel like for people in the industry, particularly someone like an agent who knows both sides intimately, they probably saw this coming a lot early than any of us did. It wouldn't surprise me if the impending lockout was a big part of Kuznetsov's decision.

my point all along has been that the lockout was a known quantity by the nhlpa and its members and associated agents going back to the end of last season which is why i suggest that kuznetsov was given advice that the next nhl season was a chancy proposition. that if he wanted a solid and reliable selection that staying home was the choice.

again, he is not missing anything nhl related as we speak.

as for mcphee and the ahl, iirc he wanted alex semin in the ahl during the last lockout and he refused to come over. this would not be the first time for mcphee. its sop.

Not a fan of either team but about a deal that has Brooks Laich and Drew Stafford as the main pieces. Obviously buffalo would have to add some. Caps get a top 6 winger and Buffalo gets a big body center that they need.

I don't think the Sabres would add much at all. Stafford is younger and has very similar stats to Laich in his career. Caps are still set at Center without him, so I think this really helps both teams. But I might be the only one, reception hasn't been terrific around here.
