I am guessing seven is going to be the magic number here.

how about no more "guaranteed" contracts like in the NFL. Hell all sports should be like that, save the owners from themselves.

NHL revenues have increased by over $1B since the last lockout. In that sense, Bettman has done his job, so I dont care that hes got a bloated salary.

On the other hand, most of those revenues are coming from the top 5-10 revenue producing teams, while half the league is just breaking even or under water. Thats the loose end hes trying to tackle now.

I dont like how his answer seems to always be "Well, we'll just take it from the players." And Im certain Fehr isnt happy with that business plan either.

That's even less likely to be accepted by the PA.
How about simply making salary=cap hit for all future contracts? That should solve the cap circumvention, and the PA shouldn't have a problem with it either.

The Canadian dollar accounts a certain % increase. The top teams are responsible for the revenue increasing from $2.1B to $3.3B. The CBC deal will be up in 2 years. A second team in Ontario will account for a big revenue increase. The PA feels the NHL will have a big boom in revenue.

The 5 years is just a number. The NHL would take 7 or 8 years. The problem is the PA will feel its 7 or 8 now and then the NHL will want 5 again and they will get 6 or 7.

i think the real solution is to make a % of the salary continue to count against the cap after a player retires for guys that sign before 35. right now over 35 guys count 100% after retiring, but a guy signed at 34 counts nothing...

the long term contracts only become an issue when it comes to the fake years at the end after you expect the guy to be able to retire...but why should tb be limited to 5 years signing stamkos who is only 22? tb could sign him for 15 years without a single 'fake' year being tacked on the end because he'll play the full deal.

i don't like the idea of setting it to 5 years for everyone because you should be able to sign a 20 year old for alot longer than you should be able to sign a 37 year old.

@JSportsnet: The NHL will announce the cancellation of the remainder of the pre-season later today. No hockey thru October 8th.

Michael Russo ‏@Russostrib
Players here were encouraged that #NHLPA rep told them Fridays mtg w #NHL has turned into 3 days of mtgs. If talks go nowhere, (1/2)

Michael Russo ‏@Russostrib
(2/2) the players say we could see a flood of locked-out NHLers leave to play elsewhere the first few weeks in October

Saw this posted in the business of hockey forum. Just figured I'd drop it here too. Hopefully something comes out of it.

Edit: Credit goes to Marc the Habs Fan for posting it

This seems to be a "make or break" session.

Most of the general public isn't even aware there is an NHL lockout going on. The best thing for the league would be to get a deal done this weekend, and not miss ANY of the regular season. Short training camp and start on time.

The momentum the league has right now will be lost with a lockout.

Dont make a mockery of our great game.

Take note between the NFL and the Refs...

Get. ****. DONE.

Please...

Make or break in terms of losing games or not, sure. But losing an entire season is still far off. We haven't crossed that line yet.

Both sides have discussed these issues since June. They did the work in the summer. Compromise. NFL compromised with their refs. Compromise.

“@stevezipay: NHL, NHLPA prepared to meet two additional days (Sat, Sun) in New York, but focus said to remain on non-core economic issues”

If nothing significant happens this weekend with these meetings, I don't see how something gets done.

Im feeling sort of optimistic now, though. I think we'll start to hear a framework of deal is being put in place and could be done within a week or so.

Not going to feel optimistic until its confirmed that core economic issues are being discussed.

It's a sad day when you find yourself not surprised that your favorite sport is cancelling games.

*sigh*

Get some **** done this weekend, please.

That's what I meant.

I think we'll have at least a partial season.

I am not sold on the collusion thing in this case...

...the owners would not loose a cent and the players would not gain a cent if RFA would have been signed more often.

If a judge/arbitrator gets this issue infront of him, he asks himself "why" the GMs would collude? And the answer is basically that it would disturb their work. Then it's pretty close for the arbitrator to ask, if this disturb the GMs work, why should he assume that the owners are colluding and not just taking the easy road?

In this case an unwritten rule isn't enough. But like a secret agreement would.

What is the difference? Not like any of this would be written down.
