Most shocking trades (trades no one saw coming)

Obviously until the lockout ends there really is no use making trade offers till we know what the cap will be, buyout and what not.

Here is the question

Shocking trades that no one saw coming

First one I can think of is Joe Thornton to SJ. I remember a few GMS being pissed that the BB GM did not do a call around to try to get a better offer.

AS an oiler fan I would love to say the gretz trade, but starting about 48hours before the deal was announced the rumours started

what other deal blinded sided you

The Phaneuf trade was out of nowhere.. especially for a trade involving Toronto and Calgary

Kovalchuk to NJ.

While leading up to it, NJ was obviously in the mix, no one would've thought NJ would've landed Kovalchuk in a million years.

Of recent trades..the E. Johnson / Stewart + Shattenkirk trade seemed to have taken a lot of people by surprise.

Mike Richards to LA seemed to catch a lot of folks completely off guard - especially coming so soon after the Carter trade.

Listening to the radio camping in 2005 and hearing the Oilers landed Pronger.

I think people knew the Flyers were going to do something to free up cap space to get a goalie, but I agree, not many people thought BOTH Richards and Carter would go back to back in such a short time

Hodgson for Kassian really did come out of nowhere. I think some Sabres fans were talking whether to keep Kass or Foligno in the long run but no Canucks fans even considered CoHo being moved with the kind of season he was having. **** was cray. Not a peep from the media either.

agreed. Ironically while at work all I could get were radio feeds on the deadline (i.e couldnt be on here lol) so all I gathered for a 20 min span was Kassian was traded...needless to say as a sabres fan I was M.Fing Darcy Reiger for all 20 mins then saw the trade and was quite happy(though i knew how bad I was gonna miss Zack even if his work ethic was souring me on him)

Mike Richards + Rob Bordson for Wayne Simmonds + Brayden Schenn + 2nd caught the whole hockey world off-guard. We all knew Carter was going weeks before and even knew the return to almost identical proportions...but Richards...that one came out of absolutely nowhere.

That's what I thought of when I first saw the thread.

The Stewart/Shattenkirk trade too. That one happened extremely late at night. I remember it like it was yesterday.

The most recent shocking trade has to be when Zbynek Michalek was essentially traded for scraps at the draft.

Not a single person saw that coming.

Actually with just Carter traded, we could have fit Bryz in the line up and be fine

The Richards trade. I thought he'd be a Flyer for the rest of his career.

Yeah people knew Pittsburgh wanted to free up cap space to try to land Parise. And Michalek was looking for a trade so they sent him to Phoenix. The problem though is that they seemed to do it in a rush, if other GM's knew that a #2-4 dman like Michalek was available then the return surely would've been better.

The surprising thing about the Johnson/Stewart trade was that it was at like 1 AM EST.

and that is why i had the word BOTH enlarged. There was speculation that Carter might be moved, but BOTH players traded on the same day in such a short time crashed this site twice

First one I thought of was the Hossa to PIT deal. He was rumoured all day, and PIT was never one of the more mentioned teams, and at the last few minutes, he made PIT a solid Cup favourite.

The Gomez to Montreal trade!

I never understood this one.

NYR need cap space to sign Gaborik, why not wait until the UFA day open then have the leverage to acquire Gomez?

Or why not sign Gaborik et let the NYR enjoy Gomez.

I think everyone can agree that the world has never been the same since Luca Caputi was traded for Nicolas Deschamps.
