Neither was doing anything with their team when they were traded, and both were major parts of their new team's blueline. Nikitin actually had the quietest 32 points (in 54 games) that you'll ever find from a defenseman.
This was really an underrated trade. I loved Nikitin but he just wasn't cutting it last year so we brought Russell in. Russell was a huge part of the Blues defensive success. Paired with Polak they really formed some great chemistry together. Russell, I thought, was our best player during the LA vs STL series.
Teddy Purcell and a 3rd (Brock Buekeboom) for Halpern. Worked out great for the Bolts. Then turn around and trade Buekeboom and 3rd before the deadline for Brewer.

In a time before HFBoards where prospects would come to be worth their weight in gold (at least in the minds of their mentors) this looked like a massive steal for Washington getting three legit veteran star players for unknown kids. But in this rare instance the HF mentality actually won out, as the vets quickly showed their age and expired never doing anything for Washington, while Boston's 3 new kids would all immediately broke out as better players (though Carey's duration was infamously short) making a big impact for Boston.
This one could easily be filed under the 'ironic' trades.

Anson Carter traded by Boston with 1st (Ales Hemsky) and 2nd (Doug Lynch) round picks in 2001 for Bill Guerin and 1st round pick in 2001 (Shaone Morrisonn).

Yeah that was a great deal for Tampa but not really as bad as it seems now for us. Purcell just never fit our system and never thrived here. We were making our first playoff push with a very young team and so Dean decided to bring in a few vets (Halpern and Modin). Modin wasn't awful, scored a few goals for us, but man was Halpern piss poor. I don't think he did anything well in his brief stint as a King.
Thought of another Avs trade, or two, involving Jordan Leopold:

Then at the deadline later on (2009, I think):
To Flames: Jordan Leopold

So, Tanguay became Wilson and Elliott. I could have sworn he became Stastny too but that pick must have came from somewhere else.

Never really got a shot in St. Louis because of his poor defensive play, too many mistakes like this one:
Columbus is a good place for him though, they'll excuse the mistakes due to the offence he brings, and maybe he'll round out his game once he gets more NHL experience.
Nikitin-Tyutin were one of the better pairings in the NHL last season IMO
Garnet Exelby and Colin Stuart to the Leafs for Pavel Kubina and Tim Stapleton was a pretty underrated trade for the Thrashers.
Also I thought grabbing John-Michael Liles for a 2012 2nd (Mike Winther, 54th overall) is one of the best trades Brian Burke has made with the Leafs, but usually you only hear about the 'bigger' deals like Phaneuf, Lupul/Gardiner, Colborne/1st, etc.... Liles is one of the Leafs most involved in the community, a quality veteran leader in a young locker room and was having a great season up until his injury.

Ducks trade Marc-Andre Bergeron to Wild for a 2008 3rd round pick (Brandon McMillan). McMillan helped a lot during 2010-2011, and I still have high hopes for him in the future.

Also, the three components of the Jeff Carter trade, in my opinion, are vastly underrated. Philly - trades a talented player who had become a distraction for an excellent young winger (Voracek) and a first-rounder that unexpectedly became a excellent young center (Couturier) Columbus - traded a young forward who looked to have stalled and a draft pick for a 35-goal scorer (Carter). When that soured, they traded Carter for a first-pairing defenseman (Jack Johnson) and a first-round pick (which has yet to be used). Johnson was stellar down the stretch with Columbus, is signed long-term, and has already asserted himself into a leadership position. Los Angeles - traded a defenseman (Johnson) and a future draft pick for a 35-goal scorer. Johnson wasn't doing much of anything with the Kings, and shipping him out allowed Slava Voynov to step into the lineup on a regular basis.
All three teams traded pieces and improved short-term and long-term with what they got back.
That was a net loss for the Blue Jackets.
If they didn't trade for Carter in the first place they'd have Voracek and Couterier (8th overall) instead of Johnson (who is vastly over-rated) and a late 1st rounder in the 2013 draft (assuming King are a top team again this season).
Andrej Meszaros to Philly for a 2nd round pick (50 overall in 2012 draft)
After having success early in his career in Ottawa (albeit playing with Chara) he went to Tampa and just never seemed to work well there. Tampa trades him to Philly and in his first season their he wins the team award for most valuable dman well seeing his point total increase by 15 from the previous year.
The 2nd round pick was later traded to Nashville in the Lindback trade.

Johnson will be more important for Columbus than Voracek and Couturier would have been. And who knows where that draft pick ends up.

Maybe, maybe not. Voracek's inability to put it all together on the ice by this point is baffling; he's one of those guys who maybe will get it and perform, and maybe he won't. Couturier may or may not have been the pick if Columbus stayed put.
We don't know what the 2013 pick will look like. Don't forget that if the Kings had been bounced early (as they were expected to be), that pick would have been 15th, 16th, or 17th in 2012 (Terevainen? Laughton? Pearson?). And we have no idea what next year will look like either.
And as I said, Johnson looked worlds different than he had with the Kings. He showed a lot down the stretch, and immediately became someone that asserted leadership and got the attention of the younger players. I can't say that he was misused with the Kings, but he looked terrific with Columbus.
The Pens getting Dupuis as a "throw in" on the Hossa trade.
Since the trade Dupuis has actually been one of the highest scoring players at even strength, in two seasons ago he cracked the top ten and last year he had the highest ES goal total of any player in the league last year. This was in a year where Staal and Sullivan were his primary line mates.
He finished last season on an 18 game scoring streak, longest in the NHL. Only Mario and Sid have longer streaks in a Pens uniform.
He's one of the pens hardest workers, a great Pker, a locker room leader according to the press in pittsburgh and one of the more under rated players in the game. And the funny thing is I remember reading an article on espn during the playoffs last year that basically said that he and coach DB didnt get along at first and how DB used to bench him during the year they one the cup.
