Here is a very strange trade scenario...

So the trade that sent Pronger to the Ducks sent back Smid, the 1st 2007/2008, and 2nd 2008...and of course Lupul.

That 2008 1st became Eberle.
The 3rd pick the Ducks had made in the 2nd round was Justin Schultz...lol. That pick was acquired from EDM in the Penner offer sheet.

Funny enough, in order to offer sheet Penner, they needed their 3rd round pick back from the Isles. So the they traded their 2nd 2008 (Hamonic!) to the Isles for the 3rd and Rourke.

The Isles then traded Bergeron (Acquired from EDM for grebeshkov and that same pick!) for the 3rd 2008 (Petrov)

Anaheim then traded the Oils 1st from the offer sheet to Buffalo (Tyler Myers) for the 17th (Gardiner) and 27th (Tikhonov).

So all because of the Pronger trade, Myers is in Buffalo, Gardiner in T.O, Hamonic for the NYI and Schultz and Smid in EDM.

It was some of the weirdest trade offs between 3 teams I have ever seen.

Penner being traded to the kings also netted the Oilers Klefbom, Teubert and Zharkov.

That 1st 2007 (Riley Nash) from the Pronger deal, was swapped with Phoenix's that year for a 2nd 2007... That 2nd was just a few spots ahead of Subban...

I remember watching a Bruins vs Flyers game in which Brad McKrimmon scored on Pete Peters from somewhere around his own blue line. Later on they were traded for each other and Peters went on to win the Vezina for Boston.

Tim Erixon demanded a trade out of Calgory to the Rangers. He was then thrown into the Nash Package. So he demanded a trade to the Rangers and was thrown into a package for someone demanding a trade.

I can't remember the names but Montreal and Boston(?) had a one for one trade and then the next offseason both players resigned with their original team. The following deadline one year to the day of the first trade they were traded for eachother again.

The old Takko Bell trade...

Minnesota North Stars trade Kari Takko to the Edmonton Oilers for Bruce Bell in November 1990....

A few years ago both James Wisniewski and Andy Wozniewski were traded on the same trade deadline day. I believe it was maybe 08-09.

the draper and murphy trades to red wings are ironic because draper was said to be a zero, no one would want him or need him. murphy was getting on the wrong side of hockey-age and was thought to be burnt out.

we (red wings) get draper, turn him into one of the best defensive forwards out there (gave him a chance and he grabbed it) and re-vitalized murphy's career mid season in 97.

again, why does it become ironic? two teams (jets/leafs) thought they were nothing and couldnt amount to anything. they both help win the first cup in how many years? what did detroit lose in all of this? 1 dollar and change.

two zeroes that couldnt amount to anything ---------> back to back stanley cups (97 and 98)

Worked out well for Detroit, they got the powerplay point specialist they needed, and had Lidstrom there to cover his many defensive mistakes while he did his thing. Unfortunately for the Leafs, they didn't have the luxury of having a player like Lidstrom on their blueline, so they needed defensemen who didn't specialize in pizza delivery.

I remember the one year the Bluejays traded John MacDonald to the Tigers for Future Considerations, and those futures ended up being MacDonald going back.
This sort of thing has happened in the NHL too. Several years ago, Brian Savage was traded to St. Louis for future considerations. I believe the future considerations were that Phoenix would claim him off waivers after the season (which is what ended up happening).

Erixon to Columbus for sure. The highlight of the offseason for most Flames fans!

I guess Carolina trading Babchuk to Calgary is worth a mention, mostly because it happened a few days after half the HF Canes fans changed their usernames to Anton.

Flames trade away Savard for basically nothing... Fail to have a legit #1 center since Joe Nieuwendyk.... Never had a legit #1 C to play with Iginla.

Seriously makes you wonder...

Not a trade, but free agent signings. Corson and Gary Roberts were signed as UFAs on the same day by the leafs. There they were together at the presser putting on their jerseys all smiles. Truth is, they couldn't stand each other since their OHL days.

Bizarre doesn't equal ironic.

Essentially, any Eklund rumor. Specifically, the Smyth to NYI. I don't think anyone saw that coming. I thought for sure he'd re-sign.

Definiton: Happening in the opposite way to what is expected, thus typically causing wry amusement.

My favourite Eklund moment was last season when Cammalleri was traded mid-game... he tweets "hearing Florida as a possible destination."

Let St. Louis walk too.

Can you imagine...

St. Louis - Savard - Iginla

Easily 50 goals for Iggy, with amazing playmakers like St. Louis & Savard...60 I think was in reach.

Now im sad.

It's not a trade, but Mike Ilitch and Jeremy Jacobs got into an argument during an owners meeting, Ilitch basically called Jacobs cheap.

So after Marty Lapointe put up 27 goals for Detroit, Jacobs thought he'd stick it to Ilitch signed him to a 4 year, $20M contract.

Marty never put up 20 goals again.

Mine was, Flyers and Leafs talking, not JVR and Schenn. Then JVR and Schenn traded a couple hours later.
