That may very well be, I'm just not seeing the problem with it.

Ranger's agent, Joe Resnick, declined to comment on what prompted his client to leave the game or return. But Branch said it might have been the enjoyment Ranger had while helping coach the 14- and 15-year olds in Whitby to the Ontario Minor Hockey Association championship.

"The minor hockey experience, the youth hockey experience just seemed to reignite his passion and appreciation for the game," Branch said.

After Ranger on July 1 became an unrestricted free agent, he was free to sign with any team.

Branch said Ranger told him his preference was to play for the Marlies.
Quote:
"There's no doubt in my mind," Lightning wing Marty St. Louis said when asked if Ranger will be able to play. "When he was with us he was so good. he had so much potential, I don't think it will be too hard for him. I'm happy for him that he's coming back."

Considering how bad we embarrassed Gardner and the rest of the Marlies defense he certainly won't hurt.

I wasn't following the Bolts when Ranger was on the team but I think this is a situation where all people can do is respect the guy's decisions and wish him well. I imagine it had to be something fairly serious for him to leave the NHL in the first place and it's pretty likely it was an issue with himself. If we're talking about a personal battle with depression or something along those lines, it was pretty courageous for him to make that decision and walk away before it affected his on-ice performance or even put his life at risk. It also makes sense for him to attempt a return to the game close to home, if those are the issues he was dealing with.

As far as the commitment is concerned, he fulfilled 2 of 3 years and it was a pretty nominal contract (under $1m), and then it appears he took his leave without pay. At least he didn't still collect a paycheque, and as far as his rights are concerned, he probably wouldn't have garnered a large return anyway, seeing as he would have been viewed as a big risk.

Leafs fan here. Take it for what it's worth, but apparently, Claude Loiselle (Leafs Ast. GM, former Bolts Ast. GM) had a big role in bringing Ranger over here.

Guy lost his passion for the game. Honestly I'd rather have him leave the team than try to play with no heart or passion out there. I'm happy that he found it again. Just wish he never lost it to begin with. He would have been very helpful the last few seasons. Oh well.

Resnick reached out to Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman last week to inform him of Ranger's intentions to sign with the Marlies.

Yzerman said the Lightning had interest in trying to bring Ranger back into the organization, but by signing with the Marlies, Ranger will remain close to home as he attempts to resume his career.

Thank you. This x 100.

He owes this team nothing. I liked him when he was here but come on, the guy's life was obviously a mess and he needed time to do his thing. He doesn't owe ANYBODY an explanation. Christ, respect the guy's privacy!

I respect the majority of the posters in here but this thread is borderline whining. Take off the fan goggles and look at this as someone's life, not an asset in a professional sports team.

#Marlies coach Eakins says first day of camp is about commitment. Ranger produced the best overall fitness scores after being off 3 yrs

Eakins was "amazed" at what kind of shape Ranger is in. Felt he set the bar for rest of team. #greatstory more on @Leafs_TV tonight at 6pm

and for a guy who has taken 3 years off, I'd expect he'd be the guy in best shape. The guys who play tend to take the off-season "off" in comparison, getting surgeries done and all that fun stuff.

That doesn't make any sense at all.

Ranger has to go the extra mile to prove to Marlie management, and his teammates, that he's committed.

There's a high likelihood that some of them are eager to see him go, and he has to outwork those first impressions.
