Franson wasn't happy with his role last season. No surprise.

Never should've been in the press box to begin with.

I have no idea how he didn't stay in the lineup last season. Played much better than Komisarek, on par with Schenn most nights. He is the only player on the Leafs who can get a shot through from the blueline as well.

Unfortunately that could mean more icetime for Komi if you're a fan of the Leafs.

Not the worst thing. Should a season start late it gives Holzer and possibly Ranger or Kostka a look.

Damn I really liked him. He should have been in our top 6 full time, arguably our top 4.

Is this supposed to be a big deal?
I mean, with the lockout happening and everything, isn't it expected that players will sign overseas?

Wait so he's not under contract with an NHL club (RFA) otherwise he couldn't really do it.

Therefore if/when NHL hockey starts again then he will remain in Sweden? If the Leafs want to re-sign him then they can't? Hope this doesn't mean the end of his NHL career (I know he's young but a lot of young RFA's go and don't come back).

wow.. huge loss for the Leafs

He's probably as good as Schenn / Komisarek at a fraction of the cap hit. Not to mention he has future upside too.

This is Wilson's parting gift.

Even an idiot would recognize he played better than Komisarek and Schenn for most of the season. I can understand playing Schenn over Komisarek as benching a young guy like him can do more harm than good...but Komisarek wasn't good at all and didn't warrant a place over Franson.

Oh well, it's not that big of a deal if Rielly is ready, or maybe signing Paul Ranger to an NHL contract if he does well in the AHL (is that even possible half way through the season?) and + Holzer is definitely ready.

Yes, but if the lockout is lifted and we have a season eventually, Franson will not be back. He signed a contract, not a lockout contract, overseas. This is an actual contract and he decided to do so because he had the right to considering he was an RFA. He had yet to re-sign with the Leafs and so decided to go overseas for the year; lockout or not, he's there for the year and IF he ever comes back, remains Leafs property. Plenty of guys have signed lockout contracts, which are totally different than regular contracts. Once the lockout lifts, those contracts become nil and they are expected back to the NHL. Franson's contract is not a lockout contract so he is there for the year.

Radulov did the same thing in Nashville, but unlike Franson, was not an RFA at the time he signed, which made it technically illegal. Plenty of players do this as RFAs though, although Franson is somewhat surprising, seeing as he looked to have a spot in Toronto playing every night from now on for sure. Typically, younger RFAs who can't crack the NHL and don't want to play in the AHL go overseas as RFAs to get playing time there and try to return a year or two later. Linus Omark just left this past summer and Jesse Joensuu just came back after spending a year with HV 71. No reason to think Franson won't come back eventually, but he wasn't believed happy in Toronto so there's a reason to believe when he does come back, if he does, that he might request a trade out. Either that or he'll have to play it out until UFA status if he wishes to play in the NHL in the future, then decide where he goes on his own once he has that right.

There goes Leaf nation's favourite trading chip. His value's now at sub-Tim Thomas levels.

the difference is that he has no nhl out-clause. So if the season does start in november, december, or january, no franson for the leafs (he was an RFA, so not under contract).

should be interesting to see if the leafs bring him back into the fold in 2013-14 or not.
Franson should be an RFA again unless the UFA age is lowered again, as he'll be 25 (on june 30th) with just 3 accrued seasons.

Gillis probably told Burke he wants Franson playing somewhere so that he's in shape once the Luongo deal is made.

And why would the Leafs want to trade him in the first place? Losing him for one season (one which isn't even guaranteed to start) isn't a big deal.

He'll be back next year.
