i hear pats or genos are the famous places but im usually weary of those kinda places because it means they might be tourist traps....obv real good but i feel these kind of places were great years ago.....i very well could be wrong about these
DiNic's roast pork at Reading Terminal won man vs food's best sandwich in America contest. I prefer Tony Luke's. Mama's on belmonte ave has a massive cheese steak which also tastes good.
As far as pats/gino's, that's where the tourists go.

I like Tony Lukes for pork, and I agree with an above poster, the cheesesteak at Mama's Pizzeria is phenomenal, however I don't consider it a Philly style cheesesteak. Philly style has to have Wiz. If you are venturous, head down to South St and wrap a Jim's cheesesteak in a Lorenzo's pizza slice to complete the Philly Taco. So wrong, but so right...

that sounds absolutely disgusting.....in an amazing way.....any chance theyre open late night? drunk mans dream
Philip's is one of my favorite places. You'll get into ridiculous lines at Pat's or Geno's, as you will with DiNic's. All of the aforementioned places are delicious. It's hard to go wrong.
Genos and pats, while they're cool places to visit because of the whole fame thing, aren't really the best places to get steaks here. From someone who lives in the city, dalessandros, while further away in manayunk, is probably my favorite. I also have a soft spot for Tony Lukes, and my girlfriend is partial to Jim's on south street, but I'm not a fan.

You need to down a 6 of PBR beforehand for it to be a real Philly taco though...

I've eaten at Pat's, Geno's, Jim's, and Dalessandro's--and I'd rank them about in the opposite order.
I do need to get down to Reading, though. Never did that in college, so I'll need to see about doing it now that I've returned to the area.
