We had one shortly after the draft, Murphy wasn't there.

I don't think we have our prospects come in twice, iirc.

In the process of reviewing each NHL team's prospects from the OHL. Reflecting back on how their season went and what's in store next year.

Carolina was today.

Nice writeup. It's refreshing to get some perspective from someone who is able to see these guys on a regular basis.

For all the plaudits we hear about Murphy's offense, it's disturbing to think of him as basically just another MAB in the making.

MAB, while talented, wasn't a PPG player until his 19 year old season, on a powerhouse Shawingan team.

And he isn't the skater that Murphy is (and MAB is no slouch in that regard himself).

For comparisons sake, Murphy was PPG at 17 on a decent Kitchener team.

Needless to say, his offense isn't that part that worries me.

Hey guys, I asked on the pens board about Brian Domoulin and thought you guys might have a little more knowledge of him at this point..

I am looking at drafting him in my keeper league and we get to hold their rights for 2 years with an option on the 3rd year.. do you guys see him making the pens team in that time?

Possibly, the Pens seem to be absolutely loaded at defense though, and Dumo projects to be far more of a defensive defenseman at the NHL level then he was in college. Especially with the Penguins as he'd have to unseat one of Letang (not happening), Martin, and Niskanen to get all that much PP time as I think the Pens tend to run a unit with 4 forwards on their top PP.

That said, it's still a better situation for him to crack the PP then it would have been here especially with Corvo back in the fold.

Might be worth taking him on a late round flyer if that's how you guys do your prospect draft, but there are probably better options out there for offensive production.

I didn't mean to be THAT critical of his game, maybe the writing gives off a vibe that I don't think he can develop into a capable, full time, NHL defender.

In his draft season, Murphy's defensive game made great strides by year's end. He was even starting to add a bit of a mean streak to his game in the way of open ice hits (ala a guy like Ryan Ellis).

This year, it was a classic case of a guy trying to do too much. He came back from the NHL camp...late because he was given a long look, and tried to do too much. In reality, all Murphy had to go was be himself and continue to do what he does best offensively. But he was trying to hard and it resulted in turnovers and bad reads. As such, his defensive game took a hit because he was spending so much time trying to make an impact offensively.

Towards the end of the season, he played much better. Next year is a big one for him. In his last year in the league (assuming he's sent back), it will be crucial for him to work within his means, get back to playing within a comfortable range offensively, but also working hard to improve his game in his own end. In essence, really putting the team on his back.

I still think he can be a quality NHL defenseman and play a regular shift. Throwing out the MAB comparisons at this point might be a tad harsh. There's no reason to suggest that Murphy can't at least be a Brian Campbell type of guy.

So Murphy had a goal and 3 assists last night in Canada's 6-5 loss to Russia. He looked great up until the last couple minutes of the game.

So NBC Sports has announced their NCAA hockey broadcast schedule for the year. Games of interest for Canes fans:

Nov. 16 Harvard at #13 Cornell 7:30 p.m.
Nov. 30 Wisconsin at #8 Denver 10 p.m.
Jan. 18 Harvard at Yale 7:30 p.m.
Mar. 1 Wisconsin at Nebraska-Omaha 7:30 p.m.

no Michigan, Minnesota, or Ohio State games on the docket surprisingly. BU and Colorado College are on, but our two guys who are commitments to play for those teams don't start there for another season.

Odd that Minnesota and Michigan don't have any games on NBCSN, so I'd assume that there'd be a ton of them on the BTN.

I wonder if Jakub Petruzalek is still on the Hurricanes radar at all after defecting for the SM Liiga and eventually the KHL. The guy is scoring a boat load in both locations and is still only 27. It would be worth a look to bring him back.

Gregory Hofmann has a nice start of the season: 3 games with Davos, 3 points (2+1). Thornton and Nash soon will come to help.

updated table for 2012-13 season

debating adding some of the NHL roster players that are playing overseas in the lockout just for statistical tracking.

Not sure to be honest. There's still a chance that he could sign overseas if the lockout goes on long enough. It's kindof a mutual "not going to take that risk" right now for Skinner and management. Both sides don't like the chances of some career AHL plug taking a run at the teams star young player.

As of now though he's on a two-way contract so if he does play in North America it's in Charlotte.

It might be good for Skinner's confidence to show up the other players in Charlotte. I'm curious to see how he plays with possible future linemates.
