Age LOL, Buffalo would trade Myers and Grigo for Spezza and like it. As a Habs fan I would easily trade Subban and Gally for Spezz - that's what it would take.
You would trade Subban and Galchenyuk for only two guaranteed years of Spezza? Actually, less than two due to this lockout? That is poor asset management on a Gainey level. I like Spezza a lot, and he would be great for us, but those two assets would get us something similar with a better contract situation, I would hope. If Spezza agreed to an extension, then we would be able to consider it, but not as things stand right now.
Good for you. Enjoy 2 years of Spezza while mortgaging your future. Buffalo minus Myers, plus Spezza is a worse team now and in the future.
I understand the contract issue, buit you are incorrect about which player makes Buffalo better immediately. It actually would all depend upon how you see your team. If you believe you are a Spezza away from a deep playoff run, you consider the deal. If you are still a year or more from a deep playoff run, you leave the deal on the table without any qualms. Context is important, though. Buffalo with Spezza is better as a team, just like Montreal with Spezza and no Subban would still be better as a team.
Edler, Kesler and Raymond for Vanek, Myers and Leino.
Pretty good value wise, aside from Edler's contract running out. I think no from Buf though, just because we can't lose Vanek's scoring yet, and hopefully we will have our own Kesler-type center (although I love him) in Girgensons. Tempting though.
First bold, Myers' contract makes up the difference in their value, pretty easily I think.
Second bold, two completely different types of players, both elite in certain areas (Defense vs. scoring). Pretty much a wash.
Third bold, spot on.
The only way I'd consider moving Kesler is if one of Hodgson or Grigorenko were coming back as well. Otherwise, due to position, Kesler is far more valuable to us. I agree Myers is more valuable to you than Edler would be, but Edler is more valuable to us than Myers would(as he'll most likely re-sign with us).
Kesler for Ehrhoff + Hodgson is something I could live with.

Valid points, and you miss 'em, huh? Van adds a pick. But seriously, could you imagine Sedin-Sedin-Vanek? You wouldn't even need a second line.
