Steelers orange and black.....getting ready for Hallowe'en are we?
It matches the fake tan worn by the average Sheffield Steelers female fan. I swear, sometimes it looks as if they just paint themselves with orange Kool-Aid. Must take a lot though given the acreage to cover.
Yeah, pretty accurate description that relates to what I've experienced on my visits there, though to be fair, the Edinburgh Capitals have had some fairly good attendances this season so far. Perhaps the light bulb has finally gone on in Scott Neil's head with regarding advertising to get fans in or perhaps the conference system that those big, bad arena teams pushed for is paying off, with local rivalries being a better draw?
You mean that thing that got unanimous approval? Or was that tongue in cheek? I know for sure the Blaze were all for it and they have to deal with Planet Ice... ok for skating not great for hockey.

I don't think I would even go as far to say that Planet Ice are "ok" for skating. The ice plant in Basingstoke fails every other month, or if it's not that the zamboni breaks down

Ouch. Planet Ice Coventry haven't had issues like that fortunately, they just don't know how to get a decent surface.

Basingstoke ice is also awful. The ice doesn't stay level all the way up to the boards so there's like a gap between the ice and the boards. Also the ice dips on the benches side which is great if you're coming to the bench when you're ****ed but apart from that it's ****

I remember the playoff final at Coventry the year we won it, by the 3rd period it looked like a game of water polo could break out, for some unknown reason PI had decided to open the main doors and let in the warm April air... that was a great idea. Still we won

The problem with Coventry is that the venue wasn't designed for ice hockey from the outset, rather fitting an ice pad was a late addition to the plans, and when the venue is anything over about 3/4 full the ventilation can't cope with the heat and as a result the ice suffers. This hasn't been much of a problem for the Blaze of late as their fans seem to have deserted them but when there are larger numbers in the arena (such as the EPL playoff finals I guess and whenever Panthers play Coventry) it becomes an issue.
Opening the doors? Sounds like a fairly normal response from Planet Ice, a company who it seems will do/spend as little as they can get away with 'managing' the various facilities they control.
Do what the new community rinks in my part of the world are doing.
No ice plant, no in floor cooling. Installing geo-thermal heat pumps set on reverse and suck the heat outts the rink area to heat the other areas of the building. Nice on the walking track and fitness rooms but minus 7 C to sit and watch your kids, local amateur games?
More natural ice really than anything with a zamboni.
But yet municipalities are building outdoor rinks with a portable ice plant in a tractor trailer that can run from Nov to April no matter the temperature.

I doubt that would work in the UK, well at least not in the Midlands where Coventry is located. The average temperature Coventry during the winter is about 4oC (39.2oF), which probably isn't cold enough to benefit from the technology you describe alone.
The ultimate issue though is one of funds. Planet Ice (who run many ice rinks in the UK) are not known for putting much money into the facilities they run, indeed they are pretty well-known for taking over facilities from other operators and then running them into the ground.

Isle of Wight ice isn't actually that bad, it's certainly better than Basingstoke. But I guess it's easy to keep the whole ice in good condition when the pad is so tiny
After much hype by Ragan on Twitter that a big signing was on the way and the almost comical way many Cardiff fans thought that they could afford an NHLer, when they are getting crowds 500 below break even, the 'big' signing has been announced.
I don't understand Ragan's logic, raising ticket prices when you have attendance problems it could just make the crowds even worse.
The biggest mistake the Devils ownership is making is putting the onus on the fans. We need these numbers...please be patient we will start to win.
Well there are are band wagon fans and band wagon jumpers it's a fact of life. Fair weather fans exist.
But usually when any team says support us or we'll go it's time to go because those statements just p*ss off folk
He seems to be rather good at getting a fan-bases' backs up does Ragan.
Hopefully Cardiff get through these tough times, between money problems and the BBT, even though I hate the team and have had some less than pleasant experiences down there I'd say they deserve better.
Old news, may have been brought up before but I was trying to find an update on the status of Phoenix Coyotes prospect Brett MacLean who collapsed on the ice and went into cardiac arrest a couple months back and saw a GB connection in there. They got their facts wrong on where he plays and his stats lol but one of the guys who helped save MacLeans life plays in the EIHL: http://eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=12304
