Sure. Gomez has a year left after this one and Bourque has 3 years left after this year. Gomez is a lot easier to deal with, whether to the minors or re-entry waivers. If we were going to be fielding a competitive team this year my answer would likely be different.

Paul Ranger has played 8 games in the past 3 1/2 years.

Ranger hasn't played professionally for the better part of 3 years. Furthermore, I'm not even sure what "system" you're referring to... because he's not in the Leafs system. He plays for an AHL team called the Toronto Marlies, and has a contract with them. They simply have the same parent corporation, and an agreement which allows the Leafs to send players to play for the Marlies.

Vancouver, none. If the cap dropped significantly then maybe Ballard. Ideally we can save the clause for a bit, if Schroeder works out for us as a 3C I'd much rather use it on Malhotra and keep Ballard. Unless Malhotra returns to form with an offseason to train of course.

How do you figure that? Vancouver is going to be the 3rd team that has to drop salaries.

Keep I mind, this isn't just buy outs. This is also for soft deal dumps. Like a long shot prospect and a mid to late round pick for a player that needs to be moved for cap relief.

sens have none. Gonchar's cap hit/salary to performance isnt great, but it's a one year contract (or he's UFA if the lockout lasts the whole season).

other than that all our contracts are fine.

Might take on a cap dump if we're well compensated (no, not komisarek or gomez).

Oilers, no buyouts necessary.

Hemsky only has 2 years on his contract, Horcoff's NTC expires after the 12/13 season and Whitney because a free agent after the 12/13 season.

Nah, that would cost too much. They're hardly paying anything with all of the money they're getting from insurance whenever he's injured. At the same time, wang probably wouldn't buy him out even if he wasn't insured because Wang doesn't do too many things which make sense.

VAN

Buyouts - none

Soft deals - Ballard, clears 4.2M.

Waive - Manny, clears 2.5M (only if needed).

Makes our 3rd pairing and 4th line weaker but we still run with the best G tandem.

Deal Luongo for value (if needed).

The Kings, Rangers and Blues may dispute this "best G tandem" claim, but there's no doubt Vancouver is up there. Certainly top 5.

I think they "deal Luongo for value (if possible)" - it's not a question of whether they need to, it's a question of whether it's possible to get a good return that fits their needs. Ballard is definitely the contract that stands out the most if the new CBA puts the Canucks into a jam.

The difference being that Bourque actually provides value as a top 6/9 winger, where Gomez really has no spot available, except maybe as a 13/14 forward. Right now, the Habs have no scoring outside of the Patches/Cole line, with not much coming down the pipe soon, and your idea is to get rid of a guy that could provide some?

Komi hands down, he is the only one with a NMC and term.

And we don't need him on the roster at all.

We can fill his spot with another teams buy out for a fraction of the cap hit.

Worst case scenario with Bourque is he can be traded for a late pick, he had one bad year and still almost scored 20 goals.. which for $3 million is reasonable and needed for a team who lacks goal scoring.

This, although I think there's a good chance he'll retire if the lockout lasts the whole season.

Does the ntc clause really matter all that much with Horcoff?

Thomas is probably it from the Bs. Maybe Savard but since hes LTIR anyway its not really impacting the cap. We have about 250k in pat eaves buy out left so that maybe too I guess.
