last I heard was they found someone paying for his insurance.

insurance is somewhere around 30 to 40k. He is going to wear number 20, like in his junior days in Graz.

30 to 40 for insurance? I thought he was way higher. I know Spezza is like 93.

I don't know, in the article it says 30 to 40. But with Ehrhoffs insurance at 20, I don't think Vaneks would cost more than 4 times as much. 40 looks right.

Strange. Maybe Spezza's is higher because of the Canadian dollar? I really have no idea on this one.

According to his homepage he will live with his family. They are neighbours of my best friend. Time to visit him more frequently

Indeed. If you bump into him, post a pic of it.

BUFFALO — It’s just temporary for now. Thomas Vanek’s contract with the Graz 99ers, a team in the winger’s native Austria, only runs until Nov. 4.

Nonetheless, Vanek’s decision to return home during the lockout is already a big deal. He’s the first Austrian NHL player to sign a deal there.
Quote:
According to an interview posted Monday on thomasvanek.at, Vanek chose the 99ers, a weak team in the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga, because he grew up in Graz and his parents still live there. His wife and three children will stay in Buffalo while he’s overseas.
Quote:
The 99ers feature a few former NHL players, including ex-Sabres defenseman Andy Delmore.

Vanek’s contract expires when European leagues break for national teams.
http://niagara-gazette.com/prosports...ing-to-Austria

Based on Vanek's earlier quotes of being reluctant to uproot his family by moving back to Europe, the short-term contract makes sense - although whatever conditioning and game-shape readiness he'll get from playing could be for nothing if the lockout ends near Christmas.

Hopefully, Delmore's work habits and great defensive skills won't rub off on Vanek.

Or Delmore's one quality skill -- his shot -- doesn't hurt him while he's camping in front of the net.

So anyway, mixed feelings about Vanek.

On the plus side, he'll be playing in "my" EBEL league, so I'll get to see him live.

On the negative side, that just means my team's (Medvescak Zagreb) chances got a lot smaller to achieve anything major this season.

In fact, Graz is playing Zagreb on the 5th (friday).

WOOHOO GO LOCKOUT!

Ennis hurt? He didn't play in yesterdays 8-4 loss. Hopefully its not serious or perhaps they made an error and he was supposed to be put in the "supernumerary foreigners" part of the remarks which means the player didn't play due to the limit of foreigners you can have playing in one game.

Remarks: SCL Tigers without Baumle, Ennis, Simon Moser (all injured) and Popovic (supernumerary foreigners).

Vaneks first press conference on home soil will be streamed LIVE - Thursday - 9:00 am EST - it can be seen here - http://www.laola1.tv/en/int/ice-hock...34--97919.html

Probably couldn't afford to pay his insurance.

  • Vanek's got his first presser tomorrow morning at 9:00AM ET (streamed live on LAOLA1; it'll be in German I assume) ... scrolls up, dammit Lax.
  • And should Vanek play Sunday, Graz's game is streamed live at 1:25PM ET on ServusTV for anyone who wants to watch.
  • Sekera has yet to dress for HC Slovan Bratislava in KHL action.

of course the lockout sucks for american hockey fans, but if this will be resolved till december this could in the end turn out nicely. It for sure pushes hockey in europe media for a few weeks...

this small hype can maybe help countries where hockey is not that well established (germany, swizerland, austria mainly). i think at least for worldcup/olympics it's nice for the US/canada participate in those tournaments with high quality competition (or at least tolerable "place fillers" besides swe/fin/rus).

see it as some kind of development aid
