Matt Gilroy signs AHL contract w/Whale then Rangers?

Quote:
Matt Gilroy has signed AHL contract with Whale. Prodigal free agent D presumably will sign with Rangers when lockout ends.

No, Gilroy signing by Whale is not a message to the unsigned Del Zotto

And why would we presume that?

I guess because he's signed with our AHL affiliate? I know it doesn't mean that he will 100% sign with the Rangers but I guess it makes for a strong possibility and shows that he WANTS to play here.

Will probably be a decent AHL player, but if he's on the NHL roster...

Well, righthanded, experienced, knows the clubhouse and the coaching staff, likely cheap...

By no means is he a longterm answer, but we all knew our bottom pair was the team's one big weakness. Certainly not a bad thing to have him as a depth option.

We could do worse to shore up the bottom pairing. He's 10 times better than Sad Stu at least.

Is he not better than Stu Bickel? I'd rather have Gilroy in the lineup to be honest... at least he can skate better than Stu. Obviously Ottawa played him so he must have SOME NHL talent. It's kind of odd that the Rangers would even consider bringing him back, though.

I like the signing. He is this years Woywitka. We all saw how quickly defensive depth comes in handy. With McIlrath hurt, they need another d-man. Torts likes him. His teammates liked him. Good signing.

I'm okay with this. I think he's better than Eminger anyway. Plus he's a Long Island guy.

I think he's solid as a 6/7 Dman. Wasn't he seeing time with the Senators against the Rangers last playoffs?

Absolutely a better option than Woywitka or Bickel, right?

Other than being 2 below average NHL players, they have nearly nothing in common.

At least Stu will drop the gloves.

I would take Bickel over Gilroy any day.

At first I was thinking "Oh god, no." But with Sauer presumed as out at the beginning of the season, (if there ever will be a start) Gilroy is a much better option than Bickel.

Low risk signing with a potential reward, hard to complain.

Decent AHL player? He was a decent NHL player. Not great, but certainly not horrendous. I'm no fan of his, but he's okay for depth purposes and is better overall than Bickel.
