Well his decision making was off at times, more than creativity it was a matter of just not knowing when passing or shooting was the best option. And really it's hard to blame him - between focusing so much on (with RESULTS) on his defensive game, a revolving door of linemates - most of them with stone hands. Yes there's some creative talent out there that could rise above that even without the experience, but saying Eller is not that level isn't saying he has no offensive instincts or creativity.

It's not that he lacks the ability to create plays or finish them. He simply has to slow the game down a bit. All the talent is there, it's more of a confidence thing. He gets excited a bit quick, and seems a little jittery. As he gets more comfortable in the league, we'll start to see his true potential.

Maybe it's just that I have zero faith in Eller. One positive thing I will say is that I hope playing in some tier 3 euro league against echl type competition will soften his hands.
IMO, hockey is very demanding on the torso and abs area, even more so that on the arms. So Eller did well to have focused on the abs and the mid section as well on the legs (on the advise of Habs' conditioning coaches I'm sure).

I see nothing wrong with his mid-section. The angle of the picture makes his over-developed obliques look a bit weird but otherwise, everything looks fine. I think people look like this when add size in a relatively short period of time. Once the loading period is done and he starts the toning phase, he'll look great and will be a monster.

Eller is like the only guy on the team who can deke without embarrassing himself.

He probably has giant thumb pad muscles from playing video hockey.

No way that's gotta be Desharnais IMO. Eller does have silky hands though.

Desharnais' skill is more mental IMO, he has some of the better hands on this team but Eller is better at physically using the puck.

Wasn't sure how to word it properly. I mean even if Desharnais is a better playmaker for now, Eller is a better puck handler, much better dangler, has a better shot, and so on. Eller has the best hands on the team as nobody is capable of using the puck as well as he does overall, even if they might have better vision or decision making or whatnot.

Desharnais might be great at "using" the puck in the sense that he knows what to do with it when he has it, but he isn't a particularly sleek puckhandler.

This is an Eller thread and I don't want to hijack it talking about Desharnais, but if Desharnais had Eller's size (or Eller had Desharnais' vision on the ice) that guy would instantly be the best guy on the team.

They both have a tremendous work ethic, but they each have their shortcomings that would prevent them from being an elite player.

I'm happy with both of them nonetheless.

The "if Desharnais had x players size" argument doesn't really work because it's hard to assume Desharnais would have worked as hard if he was more physically gifted. Yes Desharnais has a naturally high hockey IQ but both his style of play and work ethic are a direct result of being undersized without the speed or strength to directly make up for it.

But yeah there's no reason to make this an Eller vs DD topic.

Actually, that is a perfect way to describe it. But in 40+ years
as a hockey fan, I've never heard it put that way.

It's not always as simple as bigger=stronger.

That being said, athletes do not train as bodybuilders. So, I agree, Eller is likely to be stronger.
Bodybuilder's train with compounds.

Eller just needs to embolden. Will it happen? Who knows, but he has all the tools just needs to believe he can do it in the NHL.
