Isle of Wight ice isn't actually that bad, it's certainly better than Basingstoke. But I guess it's easy to keep the whole ice in good condition when the pad is so tiny
Normally its alright... This year it's shot to ****... Holes and stuff everywhere...
I see another new rink is opening this month in Uttoxeter. All I can find on ice size is two 3rds the size of an olympic surface, so undersized I guess.
Looks to be managed by Planet Ice and are offering learn to play hockey. http://www.cinebowl-iskate.co.uk/

I don't even know where that is, and I know my British geography very well.
What a stupid place to put a new rink, why not just put it in Stoke-on-Trent
Might be ok for an ENL2 Northern team to play out of, but yea weird place to put a rink.
The type of team that can play out of it isn't really the point, you want to put it somewhere where lots of people can have access to it and hopefully start playing hockey

Then it is actually pretty well placed.
Uttoxeter is half way between Stoke-on-Trent and Derby, just off the A50 (so good links to both cities as well as the country's two main motorway) and is also served by fairly regular train services from both cities.
Land is still relatively cheap in Uttoxeter, which helps lessen start up costs, and being located as it is gives the option for BUIHA-affiliated teams to be set-up at Staffordshire Uni (who have campuses in both Stafford and Stoke) and Derby Uni.

But how many people in Stoke or Derby are actually going to know it's there?
Friend is staying at Stirling University and I was going to get him tickets for the November 11th match between Edinburgh and Dundee since they are the closest 2 teams to him and the ticket site seems to be down completely

Also any idea what the usual cost is?
Edinburgh and Dundee don't sell out games he might as well just turn up on the day and get them at the door. It's £15 for an adult.

Someone being a Debbie Downer a bit on Brit hockey?
Sure in any village in Canada of 12 or 1500 there's a rink of some sort.
Here's a vid of a Northwestern NB Senior League final from spring 2012 in a town of less than 6,000. Many hockey players come from small towns like Uttoxeter. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwIEG...layer_embedded
New ice pads are being laid in UK so more kids will play.
Dundee, Fife, Edinburgh, etc may not be the top drawing clubs but the history and determination of some is remarkable.
It seems from away that even though a niche sport the game is growing.
One of my fav vids on Brit hockey.........Fife Flyers Fans.........after a terrible season. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGsZUeka7o8&feature=plcp

But that's in Canada... it's not comparable, at all.
Sure it's great they're building a new rink, I'm just saying it's a dumb place to put it.
If Sutton Sting can progress to NIHL 1
From a rink too small to play match games that they have to play NIHL games at Ice Sheffield. The organizing of clubs on any ice any where is important. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsJHw...feature=relmfu

Of course, I'm just saying, the population of Stoke is nearly 250,000 so why not put it there? Maybe stoke council didn't want one, I don't know, but even then there are much better places than Uttoxeter.
It's a waste of Planet Ice's resources if you ask me, this is the same company who were under threat of going into liquidation because they weren't paying their taxes. How about fixing our showers in Basingstoke or making the ice plant somewhat sustainable before building a small rink in a tiny village with a minuscule population that nobody has ever heard of.
I'll just agree to disagree.
When the next Stamkos, Crosby, Ovie, Bure, Gretzky and on come outta Cannock, Widnes, Birmingham, Uttoxeter. Leeds because at 5 years old you just never know. But with no ice they'll never have a chance

I'm not disagreeing, it's great they're building new rinks, they should just be smarter with where they put them, I have no problems with the other locations you've listed,

Problem is with limited resources and ice rinks and winter sports being low on people's agendas it makes sense to put a rink it a place like Stoke then Uttoxexter. I take your point about not really knowing the potential of young people, but there's more young people in a place like Stoke, more people to attend games, to get interested in the sport, more local sources of investment, etc, etc.
More ice rinks = all good in my books. But more ice rinks in places other than major towns and cities = good....ish.
Its still a shame we dont have rinks in places like Liverpool and whatnot, hopefully in the future.
