St. Thomas hosted the St.FX X-men at the Tri-County Complex last night. X won 3-2. I wasn't there - Gleaner story had STU with two PP goals.
STU opened the scoring, X countered with 2, STU tied and X took the lead in the third (if I recall the Daily Gleaner story correctly). No other stats provided.

Was a bit of a yawner... SMU carried the play for a lot of the game. Dal is going to be hard pressed to finish higher than 7th. Their best player is still Breault, when he decides to play. Dal will be fun to watch but not playoff bound, IMHO.

Foyle and I made it to BC without incident and early enough to take a short tour around campus - very nice place. Arena backs into the Football stadium. Game time is 7:05 (local). We will post a link to livestats when ready.

Les Aigles and Panthers tied at 1 after 1 period in Grand-Falls. Shots 10-7 Panthers.
STU lost to Holy Cross 2 to 1. Marc-Andre Levesque scored STU's only goal. Jon Groenheyde was excellent in the STU net. Confident we have found Lavigne's replacement.

BC defeats UNB 5-0. Shots were 34-18 for BC. First period was pretty good with period ending 1-0. BC openned it up at the 8:48 mark on the PP then again 9:51 and again at 10:31 to open a 5-0 lead (having scored their 2nd at 2:08).
One goal at 17:32 of the 3rd was more salt on the wound for UNB.
BC played a different goalie in each period.
Lacosta relieved Fullerton for the 3rd.
Only the first goal was a bit weak - Fullerton dropped the rebound and the BC player was standing right there. The rest were clean or junky goals.
UNB's D needs to improve in their own end - too much running around or missed checks. 1st and 3rd were pretty good though.
Laurier lost 3-1 against Mercyhurst tonight. All stats favoured the Lakers, with goals (3-1), shots (44-22) and penalty minutes (31 minutes against for Laurier with 21 being power play to only 8 incurred by the Lakers). The Lakers scored on their first shot, 19 seconds into the game, then scored a 5 on 3 and an additional power play goal. Former Barrie Colt Trent Hawke scored for Laurier.

It doesn't matter how strong or weak the D are, if you can't SCORE a single GOAL; you will never win, that is the simplest fact of the game.
You don't think a strong defence clearing the zone and moving the puck up to the forwards has anything to do with scoring a goal or two (strange I thought this was hockey)? Doing the math in my head if the Defensemen of a team chase the puck in their own end the entire game and can't clear their zone, doesn't that eliminate offensive opportunity for themselves?

True. But for what it's worth BC coach Jerry York said his goalies "played unbelievable" while UNB's Gardiner MacDougall thought his team played a lot better against the AHL's Portland Pirates on Thursday than they did against BC.
The BC folks tell us that almost all of their opponents in Hockey East play a version of a trap against them. I can see why. They're good.

As for UQTR, they've impressed me friday. A grittier team than in the previous years. They've owned Nipissing on the penalty kill in that 7-4 win and actually took the body to them, especially d-men Olivier Hotte.

Well I thought UQTR looked better than McGill in their respective games against UNB.
I guess the high turnover in the offseason has really made an impact.
Laurier loses 10-4 to Robert Morris. Shots were 41 to 13. Laurier's third goalie, Duncan Long played in goal, and stopped 31 of the 41 he faced. Long has now allowed 15 goals in the 2 games I know of that he started this preseason. Laurier will consistently get out shot this year, like last year, but will need their goaltenders to give up only only 2-3 goals on average for 40 or so shots. I am surprised the starts this weekend did not go Mercyhurst - Ryan Daniels and Robert Morris - Brandon Foote. Once the regular season begins, I assume Daniels and Foote will split the majority of the time. Both goalies have significant major junior pedigree and will be leaned on.
Goalscorers for Laurier were Brett Priestap, Tyler Stothers, Joseph Vanni and Ben Skinner. Laurier took 57 minutes in penalties to only 16 for Robert Morris. 15 minutes of these were for 3 separate 5 minute major penalties (2 for spearing, 1 for fighting with no offsetting fighting penalty).
