So seeing as there won't be any leaf hockey in the near future, let's talk about the other leaf that occurs at this time...
The family is thinking of a short day trip getaway to see some nice colours this fall in Ontario, preferably within a 2 hour drive of the GTA. We've been to the Dorset Lookout Tower, which was fantastic. We're looking for other suggestions of other cool/fun places where we can see some fantastic colours and since we have Leaf fans all across Ontario, I'm hoping to get some suggestions from people! Trails would be nice or maybe even town events, or any other ideas you have done with your own family during this time of the year

Saturdays are perfect to stay in and watch Hockey Night In Canada..

Excellent post: very sarcastic. Made me laugh out loud. Considering how the 'Leafs' have fallen in the standings over the last few seasons, I needed a good laugh. Thanks!
A golf course would have been good a few months ago.
Maybe just go to a nearby campground? They always have some trails. I think you could just get a day pass, not sure how much that costs if anything and would allow you access. I'm not sure but I imagine their not very busy at this time of year so wouldn't be all that crowded either.
The Royal Botanical Gardens (near Burlington) are really nice. Some areas are pretty manicured, but there's also some pretty untouched nature trails in "Cootes Paradise." IIRC it's around $20-30 for a family admission though. Less than an hour from Toronto.
Hiking a small section of the Bruce Trail is a great way to get out into nature too. It's a massive trail, the nicest sections are around a 4 hour drive from Toronto on the Bruce Peninsula, but there's plenty of good day hikes along the trail within an hour's drive from Toronto.
Stratford is a great day trip too, pretty town that's nice to walk in, and you can catch a play while you're there.
It is quite the sight. I imagine someone from a place where either temperature, type of trees, or even lack of extensive forested areas would be interested in seeing the beauty of nature.
To the OP, the Bruce Trail (anywhere on the Niagara Peninsula really) and Royal Botanical Gardens are excellent suggestions. If your looking to stay a little closer to the city, High Park or the Islands should be a good place, along with the numerous ravines and trails that criss-cross the GTA landscape.
The Minesing Wetlands are just outside of Barrie, it's one of the biggest wetlands in southern ontario. They have a trail going through it, or if you're more adventurous you can canoe through it, although you should have a good knowledge of the area or you can get lost in there easily.
I recommend just walking the trail and going to the lookout they have which overlooks the wetlands. It's a really amazing view and I'm sure it would be really cool right now with the colours.
thanks for the responses. We were originally planning on a trip east over to Prince Edward County but the colours haven't changed in that area yet so we will be going a little up north to the Belfountain Conservation Area in Caledon. We've heard that the drive there, especially along the Forks of the Credit Road is quite spectacular and there are some nice photo opportunities in the Conservation Area itself (another plan was doing the trails at Forks of the Credit Provincial Park but we only have time for one place). Hopefully the colours have changed enough in the area by this weekend
Did a week long canoe trip through Algonquin a few years ago. It was awesome.
I live in Muskoka and grew up just north of Muskoka so ive spent a lot of time in Algonquin. Its a great place even for someone who already lives "in the bush".

If you're going to that area, the Cheltenham badlands are worth stopping by too. Havent been in a long time, but I remember driving by when i was yonger was really cool to see, especially with the fall colours.
We don't get too many leaves changing colours, but right now we sure have a special hue of yellow on all our grass. We haven't had any rainfall since July and we've got at least another week of warm temps. It's a record fire risk right now. Crazy for Vancouver Island to be without rain.

Just got back from Ottawa yesterday. The drive exceeds your 2 hour limit, but the drive on the 401 was quite nice, and worth the trip IMO.

thanks, if we have time we'll stop by. According to their website, there are no longer trails here so I'm guessing it will be mostly a photo-op

thanks, we went there a couple years ago and it was quite fun. If anyone is considering this, you really need to start early in the morning in order to have time to see all the parks here
