Young talent quickly coming of age for Ottawa Senators

If the Ottawa Senators' appearance in the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs was surprising, it was only because no one expected the organization's young talent to develop so quickly. With Erik Karlsson leading the way, the Senators have another triumvirate of future Swedish stars in forwards Mika Zibanejad and Jakob Silfverberg and goaltender Robin Lehner in the pipeline.

Pro

Top Prospect
Mika Zibanejad, LW, Binghamton Senators (AHL)
Jakob Silfverberg, RW, Binghamton Senators (AHL)

Despite being drafted in different years and playing different styles, Mika Zibanejad and Jakob Silfverberg will be hearing their names together for the foreseeable future. The two offensive stars are products of the Swedish Elite League, and entering their first full season in North America, are expected to challenge for spots on Binghamton's top line.… read more

Ceci was named team captain prior to the season and the 67's are expected to challenge for the OHL title.
Most hilarious quote of the article. Anyone who knows anything about the OHL knew this was going to be a tough year for the 67s, not a potential championship season. HAHAHAH

I picked up on that as well.

One thing that I did like was how it focused on some of our projects. No Lehner, no Noesen and no Boro. Pretty awesome that we still have a fantastic prospect pool without those guys.

Nice to see some coverage of lesser known prospects. In particular Sdao, who I think might see the NHL someday.

The last few years have been huge for some Sens prospects. Silfverberg has developed at a really rapid pace, breaking records in the SEL and getting in some playoff games in the NHL. Cowen has already won a Memorial Cup, Calder Cup and was our top shut down player against the Rangers. Lehner won a Calder Cup MVP.

I'm hoping that Zibanejad and Ceci get something good going for themselves. Zibanejad has a WJC Gold Medal, but I'm hoping he can get some playoff experience with Bingo/Ottawa. Ceci I'm not expecting too much out of because the 67s aren't doing great this year.

He would have gotten a taste this year if he signed a contract.

I think they "replaced" him with Eckford. They definitely expect Sdao to be an NHL player though.

It's actually amazing how many people thought the 67s would do well.

I, as well as most fans, knew that that wouldn't be the case.

As I recall Sdao was picked just after another Sen in the 7th round 3-4 years ago. My impression was "Ooh Sdao is still there, quick get us another 7th rounder to grab him." which is why I have hopes for him.

Yup, memory was correct. Peltz was grabbed at 190, then we got pick 191 from Edmonton for a 2010 6th rounder. Clearly they wanted him.

Yup lol.

Losing that many of our key pieces and replacing them with young kids doesn't = a potential OHL championship season.

2009
1st: Cowen
2nd: Silfverberg
2nd: Lehner
4th: Wideman
5th: Hoffman
5th: Costello
6th: Cowick
7th: Peltz
7th: Sdao

This could be one of our better draft years.

Solid depth but outside of the top 3 there isnt too much out there except hoffman at 5. I still love looking at our prospect pool. With 08-09-11 the Murrays have flipped our pool into the top tier of the NHL with solid picks in almost every round.

The draft WILL have 4 or 5 NHL regulars. That's an amazing draft.

Oh without a doubt, Cowen Silfverberg and Lehner in one draft is amazing! I like Hoffmans skill set but compared within our own pool im not sold on him beating out others for the LW position down the round and the rest Wideman Cowick Sdao will be pushed down as well.

Plus I was loosely comparing 09 to 08-11 which has Karlsson, Smith, Borowiecki, Wiercioch, Grant, Petersson. I just see more potential with this group but my favorite draft, although most recent and harder to judge, is the 11. So much depth at forward, even our 4th round pick looks like a fine pro. Just so much to be excited about and when Zibby, Noesen, Puemple, Prince, Pageau, Claesson get 1-2 years pro under their belt I hope by then the rest of the league will start taking better notice at our kids.

notice how I said "better drafts?"

I meant that from one draft we have a lot of good prospects. Some very surprising. I never said "our best draft."

Only 7 more goals and he would have beaten Naslunds record.

Well... this draft is simply amazing and key for the Sens future...

Cowen + Lehner + Silfverberg + Hoffman + Sdao = wow

But it's probably not the best draft under Murray IMO (like you said in your other post, but too late I already clicked submit)

6 Mika Zibanejad C
21 Stefan Noesen R
24 Matt Puempel L
61 Shane Prince L
96 Jean-Gabriel Pageau C
126 Fredrik Claesson D
156 Darren Kramer L
171 Max McCormick F
186 Jordan Fransoo D
204 Ryan Dzingel F

And this one too (2009 could still end up better)

15 Erik Karlsson D
42 Patrick Wiercioch D
79 Zack Smith C
109 Andre Petersson R
119 Derek Grant C
139 Mark Borowiecki D
199 Emil Sandin L

2011 will probably be great because of the amount of top picks we had. We got a bunch of good players, but that's to be expected with a top six pick and two more firsts.

2009 will probably be the best based off of where we got the players. I don't have high hopes for Wiercioch, but Karlsson and Smith are already good picks, while Borowiecki is probably going to be a good pick, and Grant and Petersson could be solid NHLers.
