Casualty of the lockout or side job since he has nothing to cover over the lockout?

Probably casualty of the lockout, if he's going to cover USC football.

If that's something he wants to do though, good for him. It's a cutthroat business, and the guy got through a hole and made himself a spot.

Good for him. He wasn't very opinionated, and I always felt he was almost like a PR guy, but he is a solid writer and a good source of information. There is a lot more stability in a football gig than a hockey one.

wow talk about drastic swings in jobs.

Goes from asking questions to Terry Murray (most boring man alive) to asking Darryl Sutter (couldn't understand a thing he said) to asking questions to Lane Kiffin (most arrogant man alive)

Rich better not ask the wrong questions, Lane will try and ban him from practice like he did to Scott Wolf.

I assume this is for good. Going from covering the Kings to covering USC football is definitely a step up in his profession.

Goodluck Hammond. Seemed like a nice enough guy, but hopefully the next person is willing to ask tougher questions to the coaches and management.

good for Rich, bad for us. I highly doubt he gets replaced, at least not by an experienced reporter.

Helene Elliott would be quite the coup. She's a sexy and sassy reporter.

Or Dickie Dunn.

Lane Kiffin, get the bat ready for those Rich Hammond softballs.

Rich: Coach Kiffin, who are you going with as your starting WR's this week, any possible changes?

One thing about Hammond that really changed after the Kings hired him is the lack of inside scoops. We usually saw breaking news broken from others before Hammond picked it up or made any mention of it. I'm sure that will also be the case with the next "insider."

Yup, I loved the daily news blog but stopped following the current one after a while. Only really checked back if someone posted a link here that looked worthwhile.

He was quite the whipping boy for Matt Barry whenever news broke elsewhere and showed up 2 hours later on his Kings Insider blog.Who will Matt pick on now?

Best of luck to Rich.

Have to wonder if that is one reason why Hammond left. Not the taunts of Barry or other bloggers, but the fact that the Kings' "Insider" was left in the dark while other reporters had picked up on the news. It almost defeated the purpose of his site, especially when Helene Elliott or Lisa Dillman would have quotes and information from members of the Kings' staff well before Hammond.

That was what made no sense to me. He was the go-to guy for breaking news and insider information when he worked for Daily News. Once the Kings hired him he seemed to be the last guy to know whatever was going on. He seemed to be locked in a comfort zone of just posting pre and post game comments and not really digging anymore.

Still, he did provide valuable coverage as a professional and if he posted something it was definitely reliable information. I guess I'm gonna have to turn towards Helene for that now. At least she has nothing to be snarky about now that the Kings won

The first few times the Kings put him in front of a live camera were some of the most uncomfortable moments in my personal TV watching history. I was expecting bolts to emerge from his neck.

He seems to take his profession pretty seriously and it had to bother him that he was basically the Kings' PR writer.

Good for him making the jump.

Thought the blog was great when it first started, but deteriorated over the last couple years. Two things that really bugged me:

1) the question/answer segments were ridiculous. Hammond was so eager to answer questions, yet offered nothing the average fan with half a brain couldn't answer themselves.

2) THE COMMENTS.... Christ, how many of these idiots have to take up space praising Hammond for doing his job?

Were you around around for Cammi Granato?

She did radio color with Nick (for maybe 1/3 of a season), and she was on FSN a few times as well.

I'm uncomfortable just thinking about her.
