I believe that the NHL is seriously contemplating a two team expansion, but no way that they've already decided which two cities they're going to award franchises to. And, call me crazy, but I just don't see Toronto2 happening.
Seattle and Quebec City have are at the top of the chain, and if there are no relocations in the next couple years they'll get the two expansion teams. If a team does relocate, then the new second choice is up for debate.
Because it is better to have struggling markets that need revenue sharing instead of highly profitable ones that contribute to it?
I think Seattle is interesting, but a safer bet would probably be Wisconsin. If they locate right you would like have a good group of fans traveling to Chicago / Minnesota for away games too.
I do not consider college sports minor league sports.
NCAA sports are the SAME THING as the WHL. They are the top producing leagues to the pros.
How do you consider the Huskies different from the T-Birds? It is the same thing, different sport. It indicates what Seattle will support at the major league level and - guess what - it ain't hockey.

The WHL is where NHL players are produced, just like the NCAA is for football. If they get 60,000 to Husky football games and 10,000 to Husky baskeball games while getting 4,000 for Thunderbirds hockey, it is very clear where the loyalties lie.

If owner of Seattle team to be doesn't want to lose money in Key Arena then we are 4 years away. But the problem comes down to let say there is no plans for expansion and there is no teams that are need to be relocated than what? That is the one issue i could see happening to Seattle like where Winnipeg was until the thrashers moved up there.

The general thought is the NHL would not allow a team in Quebec until they had a new arena. Why would they allow a team to play in a much smaller arena in Seattle? I think expansion is in the works and I think the league won't be talking about expanding 4 years from now.

i mean as a temporary facility while the new one was being built.
Oh, how silly of me. People can't drive 30 miles from Everett to Seattle to watch the NHL. It has to be people actually in Seattle.
Guess we can't count Kent where the Thunderbirds play either. They're a whole 20 miles from Seattle!
Can't forget folks that fly from Alaska to view a sporting event in Seattle or even those that drive 4 hours to and from Seattle to see a sporting event.
I think thats the million dollar question people want to know. NHL team here while the Sodo Arena is under construction or NHL team after the Sodo arena is open.
Fact is, hockey will struggle in Seattle as it does in other non-traditional hockey markets. When there are 6 or 7 options people would rather spend their money on, it is impossible for NHL hockey to be a success in Seattle.
Was Ottawa a "non-traditional hockey market" when they got a team in the 90s? Why not? Because they previously had NHL hockey and never stopped having hockey at some level?

No. It isn't. Because you don't live with, go to class with, eat with, socialize with, and spend four years of your life 24/7 with a minor league franchise. You do at a University. The connection you have with your university is infinitely deeper than the connection fans have with a pro franchise.
If I had the option to see my alma mater win the Division I Men's Basketball Championship, but my favorite local minor league franchise would be CONTRACTED there wouldn't be a split second hesitation before picking my alma mater.
Why wouldn't Seattle call the Canadiens and say "would you be interested in owning an NBA Franchise? 41 more home games in Centre Bell?"
SEA and MON join the NBA, Seattle is "open" as an NHL market for expansion/relocation.
NBA isn't going to expand though so Seattle is more likely to get a team via relocation. Which team will relocate to Seattle for NBA is rather a bit open.
