Ballard was a monster ,he was one of the most selfish owners ever .He purposely kept the leafs down just so he could fatten his wallet. There is a special place in hell for this ass

I voted for Harold Ballord based on everything I read about him when looking up past history of the Maple Leafs.

From what I can tell Wirtz was to stuborn not wanting to broadcast Blackhawks home games on TV and never got into the 21st century, so are there any Blackhawks fans who can confirm that?

Yep all true about Wirtz. We didn't get games on TV till 2007 I think?

Let that date sink in for a second.

Peter Pocklington! Sold Gretzky away then tried to sell the team!

Can we get some insight on them both? It would be quite helpful.

Deep down, Ballard was very ingenious.

Why did the Leafs suck so hard under his direction? People will point him towards being cut-throat with wages; sticking his finger in every team matter; having feuds with his own players and making trades out of spite and the list go on.

But all of what he did was possible because regardless of how horrible his on ice - and even arena - product was, the seats would be filled. So why bother trying to field a competitive team if he could not do anything to make it better and still rake in massive profits? I mean, he even got away with flat out armchair GM'ing in real life by trading players he didn't like and to get back at others.

All Ballard did was run the Leafs as a for-profit business and he figured that the half-assed alternative was actually a very profitable one.

Wirtz, ainec for me. Dude essentially held back the growth of hockey in Chicagoland for almost two generations because of his inane business policies and utter disregard for his team's history, fans, and players.

That being said, Ballard certainly was a worse human being.

If I were a die hard Islanders fan living in New York I'd set up a rally to get him out of hockey.

He appointed a back-up goalie, who had no previous management experience, as the manager.

He's approved of some horrible signings and he's shown that he doesn't mind rushing his prospects now and then.

I'll put in a honorable mention vote for Oren Koules and Len Barrie. The OK Hockey regime may have been short-lived but their glorious and absolute incompetence was nothing short of breathtaking.

See I voted Ballard because he was a terrible human being.

Both guys ran their hockey teams into the ground, but Wirtz never seemed like a worse person outside of hockey than any other rich guy

Ballard.

I'll give you one quote that says it all.

According to one investor, “We know he had diabetes. We know he doesn’t follow his diet. We know he’s eighty-three. That’s why I started buying stock.”

More

In The Game, Ken Dryden wrote that Ballard seemed "like [a] wrestling villain who touches the audience to make his next villainy seem worse."

Xenophobe (calling Russians 'parasites and barnacles who steal our money'), attention *****, criminal, that all describes Ballard.

Destroying Hewitt's gondola? Yep, Ballard.
Spending one year in jail for fraud? Yep, Ballard.

Selling two farm teams full of promising players because of greed? Yep, Ballard.
Selling SC banners? Yep, Ballard.
Losing Bernie Parent because he was cheap and did not consider the WHA a threat, treating Parent like garbage? Parent refused to play for the Leafs any more and was traded to the Flyers. Yep, Ballard.
Treating Keon like junk, sabotaging his NHL career? Yep, Ballard.
Firing Neilson because he was 'stealing' media spotlight from Ballard, rehiring him shortly after a players protest, asking Neilson to wear a paper bag on his head for the first game back? Yep, Ballard.
Trading McDonald to piss off Sittler? Yep, partially Ballard.
The Leafs not signing Europeans because of Ballard's xenophobia? Yep, Ballard.
Constantly calling out players in public after poor games? Yep, Ballard.

I could go on.

That's four Hall of Famers ran out of town thanks to Harold Edwin Ballard.

Yet, still didn't mention his biggest crime of all.
