Online Restaurant Reviews

Where do you guys like to go to see if your local Chinese joint uses cat for their chicken ?

I eat out usually twice a day....I know it's expensive you don't have to tell me....

Anyways I figured I might as well contribute to restaurant reviews.....What's a good site ? Also, are there any sites that give you stuff for doing reviews ? I was kinda leaning towards "Urbanspoon"

Didn't realize Buffalo was on such hard times that it's a place where eating "once usually twice a day" was considered "expensive."

A lot of people probably could not afford to eat out at restaurants twice a day. In case you hadn't noticed the economy in the US is in "hard times".

Not doing a very good job at representing Buffalo right now Vapor, please tell me that English is your second language or something to make it up to all of us Buffalonians.

I use Urbanspoon a lot and agree with most of its ratings.

I generally don't check out restaurant reviews. The only time I will is when I'm on vacation - I'll scout restaurants in the area of my hotel or other neighbourhoods that I know I'll be in so that I'll know where I want to eat, hence no wasting time looking for a restaurant. I use Yelp.

...and I always check tripadvisor before I book my hotel for any references to bedbugs or roaches.

i find many of the review sites stupid, people whine about the stupidest **** and a couple people can give a place a bad reputation, and the consumer has no idea if these are competitors trying to make the place look bad

I find it pretty easy to tell when to not take a certain review into account when forming my opinion of a restaurant. Nonetheless, it sucks having to slog through ten stupid reviews ("OMG food took 15 whole minutes to come! Never going back!1!!") to find one or two that actually paint a fair picture of the place.

I went to urbanspoon to check the menu of my favorite local pizza place, and someone had replaced the menu with a picture of the restaurants health code violation.
Very sneaky, but I still ordered pizza.

that's funny because I guarantee you the vast majority of restaurants are violating health code at some point or another infact i'd say many violate it alot any place that gets any fresh produce could get roaches or a bug infestation rather easily

Whenever I'm traveling I bring up Google and do some food research. I tend to eat a lot of Indian food, which can easily be screwed up, so the reviews have saved me a lot of trouble.

^ I found google reviews to suck (though if they're all good or all bad then that's a good indication).

Best place is Yelp and restaurantica or urbanspoon (dunno if those last two work in the US). People on those sites actually post up somewhat insightful reviews rather than the "this place sucked" or "thizz was awesooooome"

Urban Spoon is cool if you don't know what you want. I usually Google the restaurant if I want specific info.

Yup, in Alberta you can search any restaurant and look at their violations.
Every one has some, except major chains. My friends used to work at a Boston Pizza and would catch mice weekly, and they havent had a violation in years. But they also have full time staff members who's jobs are to make sure they dont get any.

It comes in handy though, but you actually have to read into what they did wrong. I found out about this website after I visited a kabob place and it was filthy, the guy actually did a lap with an electric fly swatter before he made my food. The list of violations was pretty gross. If they are missing a thermometer on something, I'm usually not too worried.

I don't really care about violations, just if the food is good quality.

So you're OK with food that can make you violently ill, as long as it tastes good?

No thanks.

I think the two go hand in hand. It's all about caring about your product.
