Pat's and Geno's are horrible and huge tourist traps....I'm glad you acknowledged that.
  1. John's Roast Pork in South Philly (best roast pork and cheesesteak I've ever had)
  2. Steve's Steak
  3. Chinks
  4. DiNic's
  5. Frusco's

thats my list

Cheesesteaks:
1. John's
2. Dalessandros
3. Philips

Also, Lorenzo's burned down in June, so the south street taco is no more.

John's Roast Pork in South Philly is pretty damn good. Winner of best cheese steak a few years ago. Good flavor as they soak up the steak in oil before throwing it on the grill. They use the right kind of rolls, unlike Pat's or Geno's. Pork sandwiches are great too. I enjoy Jim's on South street as well.

Never been to Chinks but I've heard that they're very good too.

This thread is making me hungry.

Somehow, the turkey sandwich is a bit underwhelming.

John's is the best for Roast Pork. It's only open during the day on weekdays though. Simply amazing.

+1 for John's Roast Pork, you can't go wrong with either the pork or the cheesesteak, last time i went i got both. my only wish is they were open later.

http://www.johnsroastpork.com/

tony luke's is good, too.

FWIW, the pork should have sharp provolone, the cheesesteak should have either american or provolone. i have spent my entire life in the philly area and cooked in a few local places when i was just out of high school. if you call any pizza shop and order a cheesesteak and do not specify what cheese to put on it, it will come with american. most people from philly do not put cheese whiz on a cheesesteak.

+ 1.

Just moved back to the area after 7+ years. Took my wife to Dalessandro's, got one whiz / one American, just so she could understand the difference.

While I like other cheeses on my cheesesteaks, I think that "Philly Style" cheesesteaks should in fact be made with cheese wiz. The thing I don't like about the tourist places is that they don't melt the cheese if you order provolone or american.

Most pizza places will melt the cheese, so they are fine, but I hate non-melted cheese on a steak.

John's Roast Pork is my favorite for both the roast pork and cheesesteak. Like others have said its only open til like 2 PM on weekdays though. Dalessandro's I think might be kind of near where you're staying, but I'm not sure. Steve's are good too, and I've heard a lot of people say Chinks are really good also. I'd just google some of the places in the thread and see which one is closest.

Don't go to Pat's or Geno's. They're great if you're hungry at 2:30 in the morning, but they're pretty much the fast food equivalent of a cheesesteak.

Johns roast Pork is the best, IMO. Shanks is also at the very top of the list, followed by Tony Luke's.

Those are my top 3.

Pats and Ginos are pure tourist traps. Nothing remotely good about them, and frankly nothing really authentic about them any more either. Anther one to avoid that gets a lot of hype is Jim's on South Street.

delassandros is the best period. Plus they are in the western section of philly. Not far from the crown on city ave.

take city ave east (toward the highways, don't get on route 1 or 76, the 2 left lanes is where you want to be.

go accross the bridge, and stay toward the right look for the sign, ridge ave North.

take ridge ave up till you get to walnut lane. Make a right on walnut there will be 2 traffic lights 1st is henry, the 2nd is magdalena next to the walnut lane golf course, take a left at the 2nd light, the every next street is wendover make a left and delassandros will be on the corner at the end of the street. depending on how busy, you may have to park before the end of the block, and walk to the restaurant.

I've lived in philly and in the suburbs for quite some time. Not once have I ever had a cheesesteak with Cheesewhiz, nor have I ever seen anyone eat one that way as well.

The best cheese to get it white american. I know Pats and genos steaks get hated on , but I like to go to genos for their steaks and cheese fries.

There use to be a deli in KOP that was great called Michael's. It not what it once was , but when it just use to be a little hole in the wall they had great cheese-steaks.

p.s. I never ever understood how jim's is so popular. it is such a boring cheese steak.

I got one from some guy running a mobile stand deal. The guy actually made a fantastic cheesesteak, but it probably gave me cancer.

Why not complete the trifecta and get a chicken cheesesteak from Tony Luke's, and the others elsewhere? Booooom, just blew your mind.

GTFO. Croydon has mattresses and socks.
Dog & Bull is mad nice! Been there?
English Pizza (?) is right across the street from D&B and the train station. Many drunken nights.

You need to get there before the 12:15 lunch rush or youll probably be SOL.
Ive gotten lucky and gotten there after 1:30 and have been served.
