Berglund for Gagner isn't lateral move, it's a downgrade for the Blues easily.

And the Blues do not need or want Gagner.

Gagner really isn't a fit here and he'd be a downgrade. For the record I don't believe Gagner gets enough credit around here.

And if anything, they'd be trading their offence for D

Berglund plays center like a center. Plus, his defensive game has improved ten-fold.

Edit: Not trying to trash Gagner, just saying that Berglund is considered a core piece for us, even if he truly never takes his game to the next level. He has the makings to become a great two-way center, who's good for 50-60 points with the right linemates though, in my opinion.

Berglund is at least 5 inches taller
Berglund is a better goal scorer
Berglund is much more physical
Berglund has playoff experience
Berglund has more discipline and takes far fewer penalties
Berglund was a better face off man last year
Berglund gives the puck away less

It's pretty clear cut in my mind...

I am not trading a young talent like Yak for a 32 yr old player, no thanks, I don't care who you add, I wouldn't even trade Yak for Dats or Zetter as they are too old for what EDM is doing, a proper rebuild.

A foundation of
gets Johan Franzen + ?
gets Nail Yakupov

Edmonton gives up elite skill to gain size and experience. Detroit gives up size for much needed youth that still provides a gritty style of play, and should mesh well with Datsyuk.

gets Patrik Berglund
get Sam Gagner

Lateral move perhaps, but I personally feel gagner is slightly more skilled and has a higher ceiling...but of course Berglund is the bigger body that might require compensation.

Franzen - Nuge - Eberle
Hall - Berglund - Hemsky

McDonald - Backes - Oshie
Steen - Gagner - Tarasenko/D'Agostini

Bertuzzi - Datsyuk - Yakupov
Fillpula - Zetterberg - Nyquist?

O...M....G...

Absolute....epic......fail...

It's like poking a dead zombie and being upset when attacks you. Just let it die.

Or Vancouver trying to deal with Boston for 7 games ... or Chris Pronger singlehandedly trying to take on the likes of Byfuglien, Ladd, Eager in 2010.

Big bodies up front is always good. Especially when they have mitts and can bury goals.

Legion of Doom vs Steve Yzerman and Nicklas Lidstrom/Larry Murphy.

Different time, different game, you need size and speed today.

At even strength, Jiri Hudler scored 23 goals (21st) and 40 points (63rd), while playing 1086:06 ES minutes (107th). Hudler is small and an average skater at best.

Size and speed are assets, definitely. But skill is and always will be number one.

Because they had phenomenal goaltending and defense. Now what's your argument?

And this thread needs to die. 2 terrible proposals. Probably should just lock it

Wings won the Cup in 2008 and almost won in 2009. Pens won in 2009 and lost in the 2008 Final.

Please show me the size involved?

Gagner is considerably smaller than Berglund, which makes him a poor fit for the Hitchcock system where the center is a big body.

Gagner is also not as powerful a skater as Berglund, nor is he as talented as Berglund, overall.

All that = downgrade from a Blues' POV.

Y'know, there's probably no one here who dislikes the Red Wings more than me... and even I think this statement is utterly ridiculous.

Needless to say, I'd be willing to bet that most if not all 30 NHL general managers would disagree with you. If Datsyuk or Zetterberg was offered to the Oilers straight up for Yakupov, and the Oilers' GM didn't take them...

Proven world-class skill and experience > potential.

Ironically, your statement is the one that's ridiculous.

Zetterberg is 32 and Datsyuk is 34. Yakupov is 18 and has elite potential. There's no reason why the Oilers should do it. Maybe 3 good years of Datsyuk vs. a decade of Yakupov scoring 30+ goals.

Tough choice.
