I don't think this is the kind of deal the Leafs should be looking at. With so many young defencemen coming through the pipeline they're going to need a veteran presence back there to shelter and compliment them.
It's not bad valuewise, but Habs fans will hate it, I think.
Previous threads have shown that they wouldn't trade him for Doughty, Weber, Ryan, nor Couturier. I think it's fair to say they will laugh at this proposal.
Value looks OK but I think Montreal declines for 2 reasons:
- Habs are stuck with a few garbage contract and don't have much room under the cap, adding Phaneuf at a cap hit of 6.5 won't help in that matter. Phaneuf is also only 2 years away from UFA.
- Habs seem to be in a mini-retooling mode. In that case, they probably value Subban more than Phaneuf.
Not sure why Toronto would do this. Aside from points, Phaneuf is the leader of the team. There is no suitable replacement now or in the immediate future.
Leafs would need to add. I'm firmly in the belief that Phaneuf > Subban right now, but with age and cap hit involved, Subban certainly brings some flexibility.

I would prefer him over all those players except Doughty and Weber, and I'd assume this would have been for Weber's rights, which is hardly the same thing.
No, absolutly not. The leafs need a guy like Phaneuf who brings some leadership (limited quantities mind you) to the table as well as a big booming shot from the point and hard, intimidating hits. He can also fight when needs to. Although I believe Subban is going to be more talented then Phaneuf I believe Phaneuf is a neccesary part of our core. I do like Subban but we have Gardiner, Reilly, Liles, and Gunnarsson. Why add another PMD? We need someone who is a pure shut down, in your face, big hitter and shot blocker. Leafs need Salvador, Volchenkov, Gill, Hjmarlsson, or anyone else that brings a physical edge to the table.
Montreal gets some veteran leadership and grit with Phaneuf plus a good pick in a deep draft. Toronto gets a top pair dman and Burke-guy in Prust.
Not a chance... Phaneuf's gotten his reality check and is on his way to becoming a stable defender. I think Subban will get there one day, but he's going to get worse before he gets better, and if I'm any team in the league, I don't want to hold that asset during the time he gets worse.
The Leafs have a young D, the last thing they need is to lose their #1 defenceman for a guy who's going to be running around like a chicken with it's head cut off.
Value is off, but not that off...
Still, why exactly Montreal would trade a player they just signed...?
And why is it the 2nd Leafs-related proposal made by that user? Are the Leafs looking to... unload... Phaneuf? In which case, his value should be lower, isn't it?

Well take out Doughty and Weber and I understand why they wouldn't want to trade Subban for the other 2. He's their #1 d-man who's ridiculously underrated around here.

Every single Habs fan would trade Subban for Doughty without thinking twice.
Weber is much better than Subban, but Subban fits our needs better at the moment. He's younger, less expensive (well, I expect him to be). The Habs also won't compete for the cup anytime soon, so bringing in Weber is pointless.
Subban for Ryan is fair value-wise, but we need PK more than we need Ryan. Organisational need.
Subban is worth more than Couturier, so obviously we wouldn't do that trade.
As for the OP, I wouldn't touch that with a ten feet poll.
