Same here! I haven't been this pumped for a prospect in a long time. I was really excited about Luke Schenn, but Reilly's skill and potential exceeds that of Luke at the time by far. I don't want to get too ahead of myself and I cross my fingers that we finally have a jewel on our hands..but it's so hard not to pumped. He looks so dominate out there, just hoping he gets through the season healthy.

Veteran junior scout to me: "If he can stay healthy, Morgan Rielly will be the best #Leafs defenseman since Borje Salming. He is THAT good."

Seeing pairings involving these three will be a treat to watch.

- Phaneuf
Rielly -
Gardiner -

Percy/Blacker/Franson/Finn/Granberg/Holzer/Gunnarson/Drool/Drool/Drool
Imo if you put gardiner in the third pairing you are wasting his talents. One of him/rielly has to play with phaneuf. That or rielly starts off on the third pairing.

yup, that's the ticket.

(though Rielly is LD and Phaneuf RD).

Rielly does seem to be doing good. Let's say he does make the team. Gardiner has been great, and Phaneuf is our best defenseman. Where would you slot in Liles assuming Rielly makes the team right away? I like Liles and all but he seems to be getting pushed out by our younger guys fast. I liked the signing of him at the time, but in hindsight (that's how we always measure things right?) it seems like it wasn't needed.

Just because he's slotted on the third pairing doesn't mean that he gets minor minutes, he could still get 16-17 minutes a night. This is about how many I think he deserves.

Now we just have to sign Perry and Getzlaf, and we have quite a nice future in general...

Perry - Getzlaf - Kessel
JVR - Grabovski - Lupul
Frattin/Biggs - Kadri/Colborne - Kulemin
Brown - McClement - Ross
-D'Amigo/Ashton/McKegg/Olden

Phaneuf - Rielly
Gardiner - Finn
Percy - Gunnarsson
-Holzer/Blacker/Nilsson/Loov/Granberg

Trade for Luongo too? haha

All we have to do is sign Getzlaf and former Hart winner Corey Perry? It's so easy!

I really don't think Rielly makes the team this year (if there even is a season), but he could challenge for a spot next year. Rielly, Gardiner, Gunnarsson and Liles are all left dmen, so he'll be competing with that group (as opposed to our dmen who play on the right side, like Phaneuf, Franson and Komi). Gardiner is a long term piece, so if Rielly is going to take someone's spot, it'll be Gunnarsson's or Liles'. Gunnarsson is much younger, and quite a bit better defensively, I think he'll be a better guy to keep around on a team that has many offensive dmen, but a shortage of defensive dmen. I think that, when the time comes, Rielly will take Liles' spot, and we'll just trade JML.

Lineup when Rielly first enters the NHL (probably 2013/14 or 2014/15):
Gunnarsson - Phaneuf
Gardiner - xxx
Rielly - xxx

Lineup once Rielly gets established/comfortable in the NHL:
Rielly - Phaneuf
Gardiner - xxx
Gunnarsson - xxx

(side note, I believe Percy, Blacker and Finn all play LD as well, we could have quite the logjam at LD in the future with Rielly, Gardiner, Gunnarsson, Liles, Percy, Blacker and Finn. Hopefully some of these guys can switch to the right side, otherwise that's 7 quality players/prospects competing for 3 spots)

For that last part I'm pretty sure Blacker plays RD and Finn plays a mix of both, heard more RD than LD. I'm really high in Finn and have been since before we drafted and I have really limited doubt that he'll be a top 4 guy.

Rielly-Phaneuf
Gardiner-Finn
Gunnar/Percy-Holzer/Blacker

That's my guess, lots will probably change by the time these guys are ready to step in though.

Rielly - (Something crazy)
Gardiner - Phaneuf
Holzer - Finn

Trade some combo of Liles, Blacker, Gunnarsson and/or other assets to get "something crazy".

IF all we wanted was a #2 D-man and a servicable #1 Center what kind of deal could we get if the offer started with 2 of Liles, Gunnarsson, Blacker plus forward prospects.

I'm exciting to see what he brings in the future. His ceiling is probably that of Gonchar.

Even if we don't, if the lockout lasts all year we might get one of Nate, Monahan or Barkov. All potential number 1 c's.

Gonchar sucks. Did you see his last game in a Pitts uniform. What a lousy effort in a game 7. Then he signs with the turds only to prove my point further. Gonchar sucks.

Don't want to go crazy or anything but he reminds me more of a Brian Leetch. High hockey IQ, great skater, leader, sound positionally, great offensive instinct, makes the game look easy and amazing passes.

Or the competition is that bad? Best defenders since Salming: Iafrate, Kaberle, Svehla, Phaneuf...yeah I sure hope Rielly is better than those.

edit: not including Leetch cuz he was a rental.

Send a message via AIM to Nazem Gretzky
Gunnar-Percy has the sounds of a really solid 3rd pairing

as in extremely solid.

Iafrate (4as) - Phaneuf (3as, 1 top-5 norris)
Kaberle (4as) - McCabe (1as, 1 top-5 Norris)

i know people dont like the idea of breaking up phaneuf - gunnarsson, but i think a rielly - gunnarsson pairing would work well.
