Matt Read

What would it take to get Read to Buffalo from Philly? I think he would fit in great with our new core.
Unless Philly manages to find their #1 Dman before the trade deadline, I feel like they could really use an extra D or two. Luke Adam + Jordan Leopold, or Sekera basically straight up, thoughts?

Why would Buffalo want Read? Doesn't seem like the kind of player they need.

Way too much for someone like Read.

I forget, how many 24 goal scorers earning less than $1m a year are available?

You want him from a cap-tight team? You gotta spend big, he's hugely valuable.

It seems like almost everyone the Flyers get their hands on (goaltenders excluded) turn out to be nice players. I don't think Read would be as good on a team like Buffalo. I wouldn't take a chance on someone like him, especially if decent assets are going the other way.

Yeah, this. I doubt Read puts up the same numbers anywhere else but Philly. I wouldn't trade for him unless Philly was shopping or he requested a tade.

Value is probably fine, but I see no reason for the Flyers to do that.

With Voracek hurt overseas, I'm not sure the Flyers can deal Read, but I also don't see where Sekera would play. With the delay, Mezsaros should be ready to play most of the season.

That leave them with:

Timonen
Coburn
Meszaros
Schenn
Grossmann
MAB / Gus / etc.

Sekera isn't a 1D, and the flyers have reasonable depth in the 2-4D slots. He just doesn't really seem to fit a need.

Read will not put up 24 goals on Buffalo, he is a nice player who fits in PHI well.

No way. If Buffalo moves Sekera, it needs to be for something better and/or more desperately needed than Read.

I highly doubt Read scores anywhere near as many points in a system like Buffalo's as in Philly's. Sekera is way too valuable to Buffalo to take that risk on.

He only did it once though which is kind of an issue.

If that's your position on it, I could just as easily say that any team in the league could have a 56 goal scorer for just the league minimum....

No reason to move Read unless it is in a package for a number 1 defenseman. We have enough 2-5 defenseman.

He's only had the chance to do it once though, it's not like he's had one good year and a drop-off.

I imagine the 56 goal scorer on league minimum would be fairly valuable too.

His value to Philly is significantly higher than what teams would or should be willing to part with.

Buffalo is better off trying to draft or sign a couple of players like him in later rounds and hoping one of them pans out. Also they should keep an eye out for free agents like him who have been playing in the AHL or abroad (for instance, Columbus just signed Jonathan Audy-Marchessault this offseason who, while a long shot, is a lottery ticket for cheap).

Not really. One did it last year and the other did it in 2005.

How exactly does an undersize 26 year old rookie RW/center fit our needs?

I know it's not likely but Simmons, Voracek, or GTFO.

(I won't waste my time asking for Giroux, I'm not THAT delusional.)

Because it's never a bad thing to have depth at center and wing. Read is a smart defensive player and can play center or wing, giving us a lot of versatility. He plays center for a year or until whenever the g-men are ready, then moves to wing on the 3rd line. If we could shed some of our logjam at D and beef up our offense, I wouldn't mind.

Wait, we have a log jam at D? Sulzer is in our top 6.
Leopold-Myers
Regehr-Sekera
Sulzer-Ehrhoff
Weber

Weber, Regehr, Leo, and Sulzer all have deals that expire this summer, leaving us with...
Sekera-Myers
McNabb?-Ehrhoff
???-Pysyk

Also Read's offensive performance last year would almost assuredly never be replicated in Buffalo, while Sekera is, like, a really good defenseman on a great contract.
