20 Greatest Red Wings ever

What do you think? Vote on the 20 best Detroit Red Wings ever, based on their time as a Red Wing.

I decided to pick 12 forwards, 6 defensemen, and 2 goalies to start.

I know a lot of people will go Gordie Howe and I am totally fine with that. But while he might be Mr. Hockey, Yzerman is Mr. Red Wing for me. He never played for anyone else and his numbers hit above where Howe did while in a Red Wings jersey. Now if this is just a greatest players debate this could go a lot of ways with a vote after Howe. On pure talent I will take Fedorov in that contest. But at least for this round I give the slight nod to the Captain and look at this as Greatest Red Wings player looking at the whole term.

#1 is basically which generation you are. Howe era or Yzerman era. I am gonna go with Yzerman, but it's not a slight to Howe. I just got to see Yzerman play live for dozens of game's and him ending the drought was very special.

Maybe it was Gordie but for me, it's got to be Stevie.

Had to go with Stevie Y. He brought the cup back to Hockeytown and sparked a modern dynasty. He created the culture of winning to go along with Detroit's great history. He sacrificed his body and his points total for the good of the team. He was a gentleman through and through, the toughest competitor, and just an all around inspiring leader.

Plus he played his entire career with the Wings. A Red Wing through and through. That means a lot to me.

Gordie is "Mr. Hockey" but Yzerman is "The Captain". And we all know which team he was the captain of.

Voted Stevie. But only because Jamie Rivers wasn't an option.

Agree. I was lucky enough to be a kid toward the latter part of Howe's career and lived through Stevie's. I could have gone either way, but went with Gordie. Stevie was smooth as silk and a great leader, and he played through some tough things physically, but Gordie had that edge that I think made him a more complete hockey player.

Hard to go against Yzerman, but had to go with Mr. Hockey.

I haven't seen a lot of these guys play. I started watching hockey relatively late, but I still got to see Yzerman play, so my vote goes to Yzerman. I'm sure Howe was the best in his era, but I can't vote for someone I've never even seen play (and barely seen any highlights of).

I don't think this is going to work very well. We'll see.

If I ranked players I've actually seen, the list would start like this:

1. Steve Yzerman
2. Nicklas Lidstrom
3. Sergei Fedorov
4. Brendan Shanahan
5. Pavel Datsyuk
6. Henrik Zetterberg

etc.

Which just doesn't make sense....

Someone picked Datsyuk... only on HF Boards

Went with Gordie, but could see either Yzerman or Howe as number 1 here. My list would be followed by #3 Lindsay and #4 Lidstrom.

We've discussed this back and forth many times in the past. Still pick Stevie Y without a doubt.

Didnt see Howe play but dont care, hes without a doubt the greatest red wing. Sorry Steve but finishing top 5 in scoring 20 straight years is something you couldnt touch, nor were you the toughest player int he league for most of your tenure

I'm surprised Lidstrom isn't in the debate here. I don't think he's as far off from the top 2 as voting/posts indicate. That said, it's probably Howe. Too much tradition, and hardware, to ignore.

I'm of the same mind. I was raised by a huge hockey fan so grew up with a tremendous amount of respect for Gordie and the like.

Lidstrom is the clear #3. It's not debatable for most.
