New Jersey will need serious bad luck (2010) to be a bottom 10 team.

maybe im a negative nancy, but i think that we're the wrong mix of old and young, where we're getting too old at the top and too young at the bottom. maybe bottom 10 is an overreaction but i realistically dont see us making the playoffs this year.

Losing Parise does not drop us out of being a playoff team. Unless Lou makes a very shrewd trade for somebody's first rounder, our pick will be 15th or later.

Which might not be that unreasonable if the cap rolls back. Lots of teams will be looking to dump contracts.

Devils better take advantage of that.

Teams with a lot of cap like the Islanders will luck out in that case.

Havlat could be had from the Sharks if the cap is somewhere near 59 because they'd need to cut cap space, and a lot of it. He's the only guy with a high cap hit that they can spare too.

If we take Havlat though whose deal doesn't expire for how many years? At a $5 million cap hit, and the cap is around $60 million next year we may not be able to lock up Clarkson, and Zajac whether they're UFA's, or RFA's.

The fact that we might be a ceiling team with the same lineup we have now in a season or two is frightening. I don't see us trading for cap space either. Remember we have RFA's like Henrique who will get a raise. Josefson will likely get a small one, and Tedenby might not get anything significant if he doesn't progress much. Who knows with Butler too?

Hopefully we don't overpay Zubrus next year. Unless he has a playoffs like Sal I don't see him getting what he got. I'd give him $2.5 max, and hopefully one year deals until he retires. Let's be serious here. He's older than a player like Poni, and they're similar players. Poni has been getting contracts under $2 million the past couple years.

Hopefully the confidence Josefson is building right now in the AHL ( he's on fire ) will translate to his NHL game. If he can finally break out of his shell it will help us a TON

I guess the point of this thread is :

The Season is Cancelled and we have to focus on the 2013 draft.

I hate the Owners and the players(who aren't Devils).

In the end, it's the FAN who gets hosed.

The other side effect of a cancelled season is that we might not even get to host the Draft. The 2005 Draft was done in hasty fashion. It was supposed to be hosted in Ottawa, but they ended up having it in an Ottawa hotel without spectators. The NHL gave Ottawa the 2008 Draft as a consolation prize.

Is it too Devils fan-ish of me to think that was a large part of the reason why Newark was picked for the draft this year? If a team has the potential to get screwed out of it, why not us?

That is reading too much into it, I think.

It would be just like Lou to still not dump the pick even if they have a draft like the one Brodeur was describing in 2005 and there are no spectators to boo him for it.

We got the draft, Columbus got the ASG and Toronto got the Winter Classic game.

Damn... kind of upset with myself that I didn't let the crazy marinate long enough to complete the full conspiracy theory.

from the prospects board

NJD Director of scouting David Conte stated that Barkov has ice in his veins because of his calmness and decision making with the puck and seemed to get very impressed

We can hope, lol

I see as us a bubble team.

To me, there's holes in the team but we had the same holes at the start of last season except of course for Parise. The problem last year before Carter, Ponikarovsky, Bernier, Gionta, and even Sykora was our scoring depth. We managed to patch that up pretty well.

This year our scoring depth looks a bit troubling, but the fourth line looks a lot more promising as well. With Parise's loss, someone has to take that over.

Defensively, we are more than fine. Goaltending is a bit iffy, I want to hope for the best from both Hedberg and Brodeur, but I can't ignore that they are both getting up there in age.

I had us around a 7 seed too. Losing top end scoring talent in place of a good 4th line isn't a great trade, in my opinion.

But with a shortened seasoned, I think it's almost all out the window.

And only chance at Barkov is if we don't have a season and a lotto ball falls our way.

^ I like the guy's name "Barkov".

A lot of meme potential there.

Is it a 3.6% chance again?
