The next Winter Olympics are in Russia. There is NO way any russian players will breach their NHL contract. They have way too much to lose.

Unless they really don't care about IIHF sanctions/they don't believe they have a chance at making the Olympic team.

As for the rules themselves... I'm certain the KHL, as a league, would be ready to circumvent the agreement to accomodate any really good russian player if he was bound to a long NHL contract--AKA not Markov (only one year left after this one). I just don't see it happening either way though.

This is weak. Time for a "Habs' darkest day" story to increase TV ratings and newspaper circulation.

There's one thing I love about this lockout: I don't have to watch RDS

This sounds like a classic sketchy RDS story to me. Or Markov doesn't know the rules.

They wont break the deal for markov but if ovechkin or malkin or kovalchuk wanted to stay they would break it for sure

Just watched hockey 360.

He clearly said to the reporter he will wait and make the decision whether he stays in russia or returns back to the NHL after the lockout.

I dont think he's serious but dont blame RDS.

And then risk an IIHF sanction banning the player from playing in the upcoming Sochi Olympics? I very much doubt it.

As well as risk lawsuits from NHL/NHL team the player belongs too.

Exactly, what have been reported are facts, but you have to read between the lines and guess thats NHL vs NHLPA negociations targeted statement..

He's probably making an overblown threat the same way Ovechkin did.

Too bad this will probably still lead to Habs fans booing every Russian player ever.

For me, it sounds like typical Markov's lack of the English language skills...

It sounds like he is enjoying playing in his home country for the time being. I don't see no more than that in his declaration.

Looks like RDS got what they wanted. Looks at their board, everyone wants Markov to stay in Russia.

You obviously didn't see the video interview... its clear that he is saying that he is considering staying in Russia when an eventual CBA is signed. I agree thats its probably just a way of putting pressure on the league but his statement was clear and not an issue of being misunderstood due to language.

The post you quoted was a joke and not really what was said/interpreted.

No point in making a big deal out of this, we all know what's happening here.. Markov is just stupid, always has been, always will be. Best thing for him is not to open his mouth too much.

I'm glad, this way hopefully the rust will be shaken off of him when the Habs get back on the ice. Play safe out there Andrei.

Some of you guys are incredibly funny. He did say what he said. RDS isn't inventing it. Nobody lost any tape here.

Now the interpretation....well you do the rest. Is he saying it 'cause he really doesn't know if he wants to come back. Or as he seems to put it, he said it immediately after his remark about the players wanting a fair deal so it does seem as he's saying it to kinda put some pressure on the league.....But geez....if so....Markov isn't Ovechkin. Any kind of remark like that does not put any pressure whatsoever on anybody.

In the end though.....Markov isn't exactly the greatest public figure we have despite the love for him. He's not exactly the most vocal. Maybe not the most likeable. And with that remark, even possible that he does think of staying. But if he comes back, he is STILL very welcome based on the fact that he's our freakin best d-man and we need him until we can replace him. No matter how he looks. No matter what he says. No matter what he does.

Markov has everything to prove, he barely played since about 3 years.. Will we see a dominant A.Markov when the NHL resume or its going to be a tentative player like alot of people think? Personally Im not sure Markov will come close to be the player he used to be, and possibly not our best defenseman anymore, Subban will..

I can understand were these RDS talkbackers are coming from. After all they were probably pre-pubes when Markov last played, so they can't quite remember how good he was and how he's been giving it all for our team faithfully for the last decade.

Well it remains to be seen. Subban definitely has the edge physically now and will have much better stamina but I believe Markov will still be our PP general. He's definitely going to be a good top2 or top4 with us and we really need that kind of quality on defense atm. With Markov we have a solid top3 and some depth, without him we have one of the worst defense in the league.
