Might want to wait a bit and see if we get some details on the NHLPA's proposal

"not talking the same language" could mean a whole bunch of things

McKenzie on Montreal radio yesterday

Quote:
Earlier on Wednesday, during his regular spot on “The Morning Show” over Montreal’s TSN radio 690, McKenzie anticipated the NHLPA’s hesitant response to Tuesday’s offer, a warning to anyone who thought the PA would look at the offer and say, “That’s awesome! We’ll take it the way it is.”

“The PA is going to grind the NHL as hard as they can in order to improve this deal,” McKenzie said. “They are going to say, ‘Hey listen: We’ve said all along we’re not going to take a deal that gives us less money and less rights.’ And this new NHL offer gives players less money and less rights….So there’s going to be lots of negativity, there’s going to be lots of ups and downs, there’s going to be — I would predict over the next seven to 10 days — there will be at least one or two or three breakdowns in negotiations where it’s going off the rails.”

McKenzie believes, however, that a deal will eventually be negotiated and then go to the full membership for a vote. “Most of the players would look at it say, ‘I don’t like a lot about this, but I don’t like Plan B even more.” What is Plan B? Apparently if the players vote it down or take no action in the next seven to 10 days, the league will instantly cancel a quarter of the season for starters, and probably more shortly afterward. So McKenzie thinks it’s more possible than not that the players will go for it, but it’s quite far from a certainty.

It also sounds like the NHLPA came back with a counter that was an insult. You negotiate, not demand.

Kind of my feeling as well. He seems to be saying "this is the best offer we'll make and you have to take it", regardless of all the other stuff

Agree. I get a kick out of the rollercoaster of emotions around here.

Bettman has been a maestro during this ordeal. Staking out the 50/50 ground when he did is going to buy him a lot of equity with the public.

I guess the fans have three choices here...

1. Optimism - Convince yourself this is all part of the process and believe that this is just Bettman negotiating away from the table. Hope they'll meet again soon.

2. Realist - Wait and see what the PA offered to the NHL today just to see how far off they truly are.

3. Pessimist - Run to nearest building and jump. Or, become a Knicks fan.

Do the players actually think they are going to get better than 50/50? They stand to lose more money when this season is lost then if they just accepted the original offer.

In September,Bettman said the offers will get worse if the CBA wasn't done by 9/15. He said the same thing in 2004-05 and ended up giving the players younger free agency. Its all part of the game.

For all the people crowing about Bettman winning the PR battle and stuff like that, shouldn't you feel insulted and upset that Bettman is trying to negotiate through the fans instead of with the players union? Instead of getting a deal done shouldn't you feel upset that you're being viewed as just a tool for billionaires to extract more money from millionaires?

If that is true, that is even more distasteful of an than the league's first proposal of 43/57.

These influential players and player reps better figure out a way to tell Fehr to negotiate and get something on the table they can vote on.

This post completely ignores the fact that all the NHL players went on social media, and news outlets today preaching "cautious optimism"

BOTH SIDES are playing the fans, because they both know they're ****ing us.

I'm not picking sides, well trying not to as I lean more pro-owners these days. Just gonna sit back and wait for details of the PA's proposals to leak. Though reading tweets saying that the PA proposed increased HRR in year one is enough to get me going more pro-owners.

I'd bet their proposals again instituted some sort of fixed number for the players share of HRR, probably around $1.65 billion, if Bettman was telling the truth in saying that their proposal today wasn't far from their summer proposal. But again, I'm willing to wait and draw my own conclusions and see just how far off they are.

The very first one, yes. But I meant the 50/50 offer from two days ago.

NHL released there offer to media/fans to put an end to the idiotic PR the NHLPA was putting forth (Idiots like Montador claiming NHL had redefined HRR , etc)

Media/Fans know the owners offer and view its core as fair and a workable deal

NHLPA refuses to do that

If true, that the PA has completely refused to work within the NHL's framework, I don't know what else to say. That's ridiculous at this point.
