Keith Ballard to the New York Islanders

Assuming that Lubomir Visnovsky doesn't return to the NHL, what would the Islanders be willing to give up for Keith Ballard?

His value's at an all-time low, I don't see why we should trade him.

Cap purposes?

I get that his value is at an all-time low, but if we need to clear some cap space it would be good to know what our options would be. He is a good defenseman who just doesn't fit in here. We won't get back anything close to what we paid to get him, but if we can get something back of value I'd like to know what that could be.

if the cap goes down to as low as it is reported the NYI could make a killing on the UFA market or on a team that needs to get under the cap.
Also, the NYI have 2 d-men not on the NHL roster that are nearly ready and will have cap hits of over a million each(de Haan and Reinhart--1.6mill and 3.75mill respectively)

I'd rather wait until we know if we're forced to because of the cap. Realistically a 2nd rounder is probably the absolute most a team would give for him.

Keith Ballard
4th Round Pick

5th Round Pick

We give them incentive to turn there 5th rounder in to a 4th rounder. In return they take him from us and reach the cap floor.

6th round pick.

What is he worth? We'll never find out on here. But his value couldn't be lower than right now. So it's not very realistic for Gillis to trade him imo.

Why would people assume that.

Because he tried to nullify the trade btwn the 2 teams. This obviously made everybody assume he just didn't want to play in LIsland.

Report over here in Europe suggested that it was the NHLPA being behind it

Ballard is a liability not an asset. Be happy with Carkner for today.

I would rather have Ballard (an awesome third pairing d man disregarding salary) then have the 4 mill cap space for nobody really. We have a better team with him then with the cap space, if the cap goes down then he gets moved for a 4th or something but ZERO reason to move him now as I doubt anyone in management wants to trust that spot to a scrub like Alberts or a newbie like Connauton.

I thought I read somewhere that Visnovsky was going back to Russia and not coming back to North America? Could be wrong though.

Why would anyone trade for Dman struggling with injuries and playing on the bottom pairing all the while making 4.2m? Not to mention the icing on the cake is that he still has 3 years left on his contract. Wouldn't touch this one with a 10 foot pole.

He wouldn't need too. He would play 3rd pairing left side.

Well I'd be willing to expand the deal to further involve some more value.

I refuse to believe that Ballard is THAT bad. I think he's just horrible under Vancouver's system.

I would assume that if the Islanders had an interest in Ballard, the goal would be to upgrade the defense. Losing MacDonald to get him does not accomplish this.

If they wait, they can probably get him on waivers.

Doubtful.

I'm thinking that if the new CBA imposes a 60m cap, and teams are allowed to go to 70m this year as a transitional period, then Gillis should allow Ballard to play it out in the hopes it increases his value. Then auction him off at the end of the year.

He was turning the corner in the last 20 games last year. Some say he played better than any other D during that time. Give him a full year on that momentum and see what he does.
