Perron is good on offense, good on defense, but he's nothing special, I think a lot like Marcus Johansson for the Caps. While Laich's D and versatility are very rare in the modern NHL.
Would you swap Johansson for Laich?
Perron adresses a need. Laich is a strenght.

Steen is well liked by the blues fan base. I agree they have similar values and both are great players.. It's just sentimental i think.
You'll have to forgive Blues fans their impression the Brooks Laich is a more common commodity than he is. The team they watch most often has a roster that is absolutely sh*tty with above average-to-stellar defensive forwards.
this is not to say he's not a fine player - he is. There are a ton of teams out there that would kill to have the guy, for very legitimate reasons, and if - as a caps fan - you're looking to pretend-trade him for assets, you should shop him to those other teams, because in strictly relative terms, the pretend-return from Blues fans is going to be hot garbage.

Steen: 126 points in 183 games = .689 points per game = 56 points per 82 games
Laich: 148 points in 242 games = .612 points per game = 50 points per 82 games
Steen is better offensively. Steen is just as versatile too. Laich is more physical and more durable.
Perron is one of our few offensively creative forwards, which makes him that much more valuable to us. I love Laich's hard nosed style, but with guys like Backes, Oshie, and Steen already in the lineup, I feel like we'd be better off with a creative mind like Perron's.

Yes, this is precisely the issue and summed up well.
As mentioned above, Steen is expected to fill the 3rd line centre spot, and if he can't we have other options to explore first. Such as Oshie, McDonald, and possibly even Schwartz.

McDonald and Schwartz were mentioned as candidates, Oshie is too valuable with Backes to be moved off of his line, point is we arent actively or just looking for a center.

This is obviously not going to happen and I'm not trying to start a serious argument here, but how cool would it be if Tarasenko and Kuznetsov were on the same team/line...(preferably the Blues)
The Blues have zero need for Laich, he's redundant in our system.
Perron is worth more to the Blues than he is in a trade.
Perron has potential to be a 25-30 annual goal scorer. The Blues aren't trading him away for a player that has already had what are likely his best seasons.

Almost as cool as an Ovechkin-Backes-Wilson take no prisoners line
St Louis gets an ideal center for their third line, allowing them to move Steen back to the wing where he's better suited. Washington gets a scoring winger for their second line, which they desperately need. I think they're close enough value-wise for a 1-for-1 swap - Perron's younger and is all-around better on offense, while Laich is bigger, significantly more durable, and is the better two-way player. So, thoughts?
As much as I would like to upgrade our 3rd liner center position, it is not worth losing DP. First off, DP is worth more than Laich. And secondly, it would make our team weaker than if we had DP and a lesser 3rd line center.
And I am pretty sure this has been stated before, but here it is again. The only way that Armstrong upgrades his team will be via picks/prospects only, his words. And of course if it was a huge piece coming back to St. Louis, he definitely would include a nhl player. But Laich is not a huge piece.
Under almost no circumstances would I ever trade Steen for Laich. I like Laich but not for Steen.

I would ignore him. He's the one that said the Blues should trade Tarasenko to the caps because there would be no chance of getting him to come over so we should send him to the caps because their Russians would convince him to come over.
