Haha Sauve. Think he came in for relief for Sean Burke in the 88 playoffs.

Here an obscure goaltender.

JF Damphousse! Clemmensen was the backup starting in 01/02, but didn't start a game. Only got a relief appearance I think. They sent him to the Rats, called down Damphousse, and I think he started a few games that season. Eventually Beezer called, and briefly came out of the retirement for the very end of the season.

Mike Danton haha.

Danton Cole. Came over with Shawn Chambers in that trade.

Wasn't there a guy named Mike Jefferson or something?

I remember one time about 5 of out top 6 was injured at the same time, and we had to use Danton, Jefferson, Dagenais, and Bicek. Pretty sure we sucked, and slumped too.

Wasn't he supposed to "replace" Rafalski? Or am I off on my years?

Did he ever start two games for us? I remember the game where coach ya know pulled Moose after 2 minutes cause we went down 2 goals early, and put him in and we got blown out. Think he got a start in St Louis or somewhere which might have been his hometown. Other than that he was just some guy dressed as backup when Hedberg was starting, and Marty was injured.

I know I already said it, but I think Pierre Dagenais is always going to be the winner of this for me. I think I was 12 when he was first called up, so I didn't know too much of players the Devils had in the AHL (aside from better prospects). My family was on vacation when he first debuted and put up a few points. We had literally never heard of him, yet when we try to see how the Devils did while we were away, his name keeps coming up as a guy who put up a goal or an assist or something. Considering he only played 9 games that year (and another 16 next season), I almost missed his entire first year with the Devils. Its almost as if it wasn't real in my little world.

In some people's eyes. That was obviously a very high expectation for someone who had been a non-tendered RFA the summer prior.

But he was a big body who skated well and added a bit of offense. Wasn't horrid in his own zone either. His CORSI numbers were the best on our D.

I feel like aside from Hedberg, we can probably pick any backup for Marty as a great candidate for this one. Yann Denis will probably be a front runner in a couple of years for this thread.

I only remember the St. Louis game during Macleans tenure. We almost won that game that included Tedenby's penalty shot goal. But I think we lost by one because the ref yelled out "between his legs" when the puck was loose when nobody knew it.

Totally agreed. Rachunek could of done a job for us. Sucks that he's gone.

I'm not sure which one was supposed to replace Rafalski. Lukowich, and Rafalski left, and then we signed Rachunek, Vishnevski, and brought up Mottau from the minors.

For Scott about Dagenais, and scoring. When him, and those other guys like Bicek, Danton, etc were up we were slumping. Pretty sure 4 or 5 top 6 guys were out at once. One game we won like 2 or 3 to 0 with Dagenais, and the other call ups scoring the only goals!

Christian Berglund is another one for me.

Willie Mitchell stands out because he was playing minutes in 00-01 while Niedermayer was holding out.

Between Colin White, Sheldon Souray, Jason Smith, and Willie Mitchell, the Devils had the market cornered on lumbering defensive defensemen (maybe not quite so defensive in Souray's case after a couple years) of the early to mid 2000s.

Here's more of my memory here. Willie Mitchell scored an own goal against us one game, and a couple days later Niedermayer, and Arnott were signed. Not sure that had much to do with it, as we were on a big losing streak at the time anyway. Mike Commodore was another young defenseman we had those days. As of last year he was still in the NHL. He did a number on us in the 06 Carolina series when he played for the Canes.

If we're talking Skoula, and Havelid how about Ansi Salmela? He had that OT goal!

Salmela and Vishnevski were both too popular on here to be obscure.

there was a lot of cursing in my household about that losing streak, and Mitchell was the target most of the time. it's etched in my memory.
