What we need more urgently is a number one goalie, and to a lesser extent a number one centre.
No... it's really not... too many guys who need to think the game offensively. They need to swap Franson for a guy who plays a shutdown game, instead of miscasting defencemen and setting themselves up to fail.

I agree about the miscasting, Wilson had Beauchemin, Komisarek, and Schenn pinching like crazy, which wasn't tailoring to their strengths at all. That said, I love mobile, puck carrying defensemen, and I think in this day of zone defense, offensive defensemen are becoming the x factor that can give one team the edge over another.
...after reading Spectors Hockey about the Leafs acquiring Luongo, I was thinking about Summers and Bissonnette for Connolly as a basis for a trade (prefer Bozak).

I think Lombardi could be had for cheap and would fit in well with the Coyotes. A 5th round pick would probably get him.

Then the thread should be about trading Franson or Liles for a more defensive dman, no? If we trade Mac for one, then we're back to having 2 nhl-calibre dmen riding the pine.

Well, Franson is without a contract, so he will be in Sweden until he does. That eliminates one person from riding the pine.

I don't think that there's any way that a North American player, who is a legitimate top 4, or at the worst top 5 dman on most teams would decide to stay in Switzerland over NA for less money. It's possible, but just very very unlikely. Off-course if we add an extra dman, then that may make him think twice.
We're also forgetting the little matter of Ranger. I have to think that there's a better than 50% chance that he'll be back to NHL form at some point this season.
I'd do MacArthur for Murray and a pick. Mac is a good, underrated player, but I don't really see where he fits on the Leafs depth chart moving forward and I'd be surprised if he were still with the Leafs next July 1st anyway. Murray would add some much-needed toughness and a veteran presence, if only as a stop-gap. Besides, with the Leafs' bottom four now looking like Gardiner/Liles/Komisarek/Holzer, you can't really go wrong with a guy who you know can play well in his own end at the NHL level.
Leafs more or less need a 2nd pairing Defensive D-man at least. If Volch has kept any form since Ottawa he'd be great on the Leafs. Is he still a shot blocking machine? Why would NJ fans evne think of getting rid of him?
But seriously, to everyone posting afterwards as to why the Leafs need a defensive defensemen:
Our only PK-eligible players are Gunnarsson, Phaneuf, Komisarek and Holzer.
Gunnarsson is a good two-way d-man but excels at positionign and passing. Phaneuf is already going to play top-line minutes, and PP time ontop of PK. Komisarek has been awful the last 3 seasons, and Holzer will be a rookie with very low expectations.
After those four the Maple Leafs prospect pool contains Finn, a fast moving offensive-oriented D-man, Jesse Blacker, a defensemen with good offensive skills, Stuart Percy, a good two-way defender who seems to be like Gunnarsson, Morgan Rielly, fast skating, offensively amazing defender, and Jake Gardiner. None of them qualify for the role the Leafs want which is a guy to come in and play PK minutes.
