2013 1st Overall Pick

Disregarding CBA negotiations, what could the 1st overall pick fetch if it were used as trade bait? Players like Sean Monahan or Nathan Mackinnon are valued very high, even this early. This most recent draft's first overall was certainly drawing a large amount of speculation, are we going to see the same thing upcoming year for these possible "generational" talents?

I would say the top 3 picks are untouchable.

Unless the team with the 1st overall, has McKinnon and Jones ranked 1A
and 1B on their draft board, I doubt the pick would be dealt.

The team holding 1st overall, may be willing to drop down 1 spot if they feel the talent drop off is not big and they get something significant back, but I doubt they move a generational talent, for several less talented players and lower picks.

I don't think Calgary has/can part with anything to acquire the 1st overall...

Giordano / Baertschi / 1st 2013 for 1st overall might do it... I wouldn't though.

Rielly was picked 5th overall just a few months ago. All those extra pieces PLUS a first to move up 'technically' 4 spots? That's ridiculous. Of course Toronto doesn't do this.

The only possible way I see someone moving the 1st overall pick, and a slim chance at that, is if its a team in absolute win now mode that can get what they need to get over the hump.

Maybe a team like Philly wins it and trades it for a #1 D and maybe even more?

before the draft untouchable
After oilers get the pick--does not matter it is a week draft and no one wants the pick

Well honestly Frattin and Colborne arent very valuable pieces. Kadris upside is questionable at this point but likely a 2nd liner, Biggs is a project player who could be anything from a 4th liner to 2nd line PWF. Reilly though will likely be a real deal.

The big thing it depends on is where the pick slots in. Is it top 5? Out of top 10?

Not to mention getting Mackinnon would solve a glaring need, 1st line C. Plus he seems to be most hyped player since Tavares, and 1st overalls dont go wrong very often. (EJ last one not going as projected, but all forwards in the last several years have been right on track)

EDIT: I agree btw that TO doesnt do this, but its not THAT irrational.

I think in that situation, we would be more likely to see the Flyers move other young trade chips for that #1D and walk out of the draft, with the next Crosby.

When is the last time the 1st overall, considered to be a generational talent, was dealt

Would TB accept that for Stamkos?

Would Pitt accept that for Crosby?

4 spots is absolutely massive when it's from 5th to 1st. The value difference of those picks is huge. Even 2nd to 1st in certain years (such as 2012) is a huge change in value.

Whoever's picking 1st overall next year says no easily. Toronto would definitely do it. They're packaging a bunch of lesser pieces + Rielly for a potential generational talent.

If Edmonton gets it they should move down.

And don't bring up Yakupov-Murray. Completely different.

1st overall pick is nearly untouchable unless it involves going down a spot or two, and only if there are multiple projected franchise players. Getting a future franchise player is far more valuable to a sucky team than getting a bunch of mid-range prospects, mid-range players and a later first rounder.

Too much!

Seriously, unless the 2012-13 season is lost and a surprise team get the 1st overall pick via lottery, I say that any team that will get the 1st next season will keep it. Usually teams finishing last won't trade their young assets. They'll focus on rebuilding...

Anyway the NHL keeps getting younger and younger and prospects nowadays worth a lot more than it used to.

I don't mind any team getting the 1st really except Edmonton. They just had 3 in a row.

Looking at rosters right now, I think that Winnipeg or NYIslanders are probably the two teams that most likely to get the 1st overall pick next season.

Please explain why? Their main needs are at center and defense. They could get a stud at either position so what good reason would there be to trade down?

For the record if there is a season I highly doubt that we will get the #1, there is a lot of pressure for this team to take a step forward.

Because a Franchise defenseman would make a bigger to you lineup than adding another franchise centre. You currently have a potential franchise centre and a decent 2nd line centre, but no top pairing defensemen. If you can trade down from Mackinnon to Jones and gain a nice asset while doing so imo they should do it.
