Are the Sens for sale?

I was listening to the Hockeycentral @ Noon today and around the 9:30 mark, Kypreos and MacLean insinuated that the Sens were for sale, that in fact people were looking at the books. They referred to a certain Ontario team and seeing as how the Leafs were just sold, logic should dictate it is the Senators.

Would you welcome a change? What would a move like this mean for the franchise going forward?

If they just said an Ontario team, then it could be an expansion franchise

Pretty sure Expansion has been discussed about 2 additional canadian teams i.e Quebec City and possibly Markham? as they are in the mists of building a new state of the art stadium.

Meh. They were way too vague to make an assumption.

MacLean "I've heard some teams are being looked at."
Kypreos "Which teams"
DM "I can't say."
NK "Was one of them in Ontario?"
DM "Could be."

Meh selling a team doesn't mean leaving a city and there was some rumors last year about Melnyk's financials after the divorce.

Wouldn't say it's impossible for Ottawa to see an owner change but with the market today some one will want to keep these franchises in Canada.

After Quebec city there's seriously not a lot of big market cities left in Canada to expand to.

I don't think from a business stand point regardless Ottawa as a Canadian city has a huge risk to loose a team.

Is it just me or does this feel like a really long off-season?

I've heard Melnyk isn't exactly in good financial shape. No idea how reliable this is, 3rd hand information.

Going through a divorce and selling his beloved Majors shows that.

Makes sense why he would reduce the payroll to bottoms in the league - best time to sell is now, hopefully we get a rich owner who gets our payroll near the top so we can sign all our top players.

Actually, Melnyk is a very smart man.

It's not that he can't afford to spend to the cap, it's that it would be unwise and foolish to do so given the current situation the Senators are in.

Melnyk has been a very good owner for Ottawa.

You just have to look as far as Edmonton and the "Seattle roadtrip" to see what could be.

Hopefully there's no truth to these rumours.

I very much enjoy our current owner and cannot imagine the alternative being much better (whereas much worse is certainly possible), so i hope it's not true.

The Euge is fine, he's a little too sentimental/loyal at times but I'd rather that than someone that just doesn't give a crap.

He's highly entertaining as well, which just makes him more appealing.

As for this rumour...I seem to recall an old Globe and Mail article where Melnyk said fan support would have to reach Atlanta/Columbus levels for this to happen, that fans were driving him crazy and all that.

http://www.senatorsextra.com/main/tr...-eugene-melnyk

WS On the Fan 590 yesterday, Doug MacLean suggested you may have lost $14 million on the hockey club, and Nick Kypreos said he hears you may be wanting to sell the team. Do you have a comment on any of that?

EM

Yeah, I actually do. You know what, they’re absolutely dead on, if you put me into the movie Wizard of Oz next to Dorothy while she’s clicking her heels.

WS Okay.

EM They’re out of their minds! That team will never be sold. Never for sale. Did we lose money last year, no question. Just do the math. I’ve always said, we’ve got to go deep into the second round to break even.

NEVER be sold. NEVER for sale.

Just an OT question, if Seattle did get a team would you cheer for them, or Ottawa. (Please don't feel pressure to say Ottawa because of being on a Sens board, I was just curious)

Even id Melnyk puts the Sens up for sale, no chance would the new owner move the team. It just wouldn't happen.

Nothing to worry about folks.

You know, I've actually thought about this before. I think the Seattle team might be my new #1A to be honest, which would work out since they would be in different conferences. I've lived in Washington my whole life, and have never had a team to call my own. The Canucks are only a little over two hours away from where I currently live, but I could never support that team

It might not work out like that though, because Im a pretty damn loyal fan. Hell, I picked the Sens something like 12 years ago just because I loved the third jersey that was introduced in 2000... I still have it hanging on my wall actually. That and Yashin was amazing in NHL Faceoff 2000 haha.
