Then the thread should be about trading Franson or Liles for a more defensive dman, no? If we trade Mac for one, then we're back to having 2 nhl-calibre dmen riding the pine.
The idea would be to find a deal that allows us to trade Franson for futures, or in part for the defenceman we need.

Nope... he's just not the right piece. The defencemen from the Sharks that the Leafs would be looking to acquire are Vlasic and Burns.

he just doesn't fit Deboer's system, essentially.

Volch has a lot of mileage on his body and to many years left on his contract.
As a Leafs fan I've got no interest in taking on that contract.
Leafs have an over abundance of puck moving d-men on our team. What stay at home defender does your team give up for a decent winger in Mac? (I said decent, not great. Please keep in mind.)
wouldnt it make some sense to flip komasarek for ballard and give both guys a chance for a fresh start? if you do that you can flip macarthur for raymond in the exact same deal
If PHX were willing to trade Klesla for Mac then I'd take that deal over Murray or Volchenkov for sure. Underrated winger for an underrated d-man.
Honestly that's just the general idea, for GMDM to pull the trigger then I'm sure Toronto would have to add a third or fourth to make it happen because rusty is important to our pk.
It's a bone in his foot...not the ankle injury that was initially reported and certainly not a broken leg.
And it's only a fracture in his left foot. Doctors expect him to miss 4-6 weeks, however his agent says he'll be able to return sooner. Like you say not a broken leg and definately not a serious injury.
I think that if Burke thought we needed a defensive defenseman he wouldnt have traded Luke Schenn. Look at the best teams in the league and they can all move the puck from the back end. Vancouver has Edler and Bieksa, LA has Doughty and Voynov, Chicago has Keith and Seabrook. The need for a truly defensive defenseman is diminishing in the changing NHL. Burke is preparing for this as seen with the drafting of Percy and Rielly, along with the addition of Gardiner.
Regarding LA's defense, I think you're oversimplifying things a bit. Each of their pairs has a puck mover and a more defensive defense guy. Doughty is paired with Scuderi, Voynov with Willie Mitchell, and Alec Martinez is paired with Matt Greene. Yes, their puck movers are important, but they also have a lot of solid defensive guys as well.

Clutterbuck is one but we wouldn't wanna give him up for just MacArthur. He is a very valuable 3rd liner. good for 15+ goals a year and great on PK. Perfect 3rd liner.

There is no way MacArthur alone gets you Clutterbuck.

Not saying Mac can necessarily get any of these players (and some are C's) but I would target guys like:
Max Talbot
Craig Adams
Lauri Korpikoski
Matt Cooke
Eric Belanger
Travis Moen
