For the last half of the season Gards was on pace for about 40 - 50 pts over an 82 game span. And that is when the teams offence was drying up.. I like how he is projecting right now, and in all honesty would take him over Schultz any day. Still wish we had both though...

Never seen Schultz play, but Gardiner's defensive play leaves a lot to be desired.

I remember countless times last season where he was on the PK and looked completely lost. Like floating in no mans land, completely confused..

But.. Ron Wilson was the Coach.

Yeah, to be fair that's how most of the team looked on the PK all year.

Stop being defensive! I would like to know what award you mean and who gave it.

Huge component. Our PK has been dismal for years under Wilson and all this news about Allaire not wanting the goalies attending special teams meetings. Just utter nonsense. Hopefully Carlyle can correct all these issues because that's very important to our possible success.

There was no award.

What he did accomplish is scoring more points than any of his peers.
(i.e. rookie defensemen)

Both culpable and thankfully both gone.
Allaire would have been resigned and lauded, if Wilson had a system
which was a bit more defensively responsible. Hell RW might have
survived too.

I remember when he was hired, and was lauded as a great defensive
coach. Where did that go? I hope its not the same way again

Jake Gardiner was named to NHL All-Rookie Team, so I'm guessing that means he was the top rookie defenceman or at least one of them

The NHL names an all-rookie team every year.

Gardiner and Faulk were named as the best rookie defenders in the league. Gardiner was the better of the two.

Playing like a punk is why he generates negative discussions.

Exactly. Kid has always been known for hiding behind the referees. Gardiner plays his game and doesn't do very much after the whistle. Subban on the other hand, stirs the pot constantly.

Bingo!!

I loved tucker, but hate subban. The difference? Both would cause ****, but only one would back it up. Its funny i was a subban fan when he was in the O

Back on topic. Gards right now since we have minimal schultz exposer. But that could change with time.

Since Gardiner has the experience of already playing in the NHL I would go with him based on that fact.

Fun fact: Jake Gardiner had the lowest PPGA/min of any Leafs defenceman last season. In terms of SHTOI it went Phaneuf (205min), Gunnarsson (200min), Gardiner (132min), Schenn (106min).

Perhaps it's because he's our only defenceman with the shiftiness and hockey IQ to make smart plays like getting it out of our zone (either flipping or skating it out).

Schultz was drafted in the 2nd round, Gardiner was drafted in the first round, both by the ducks in 2008 iirc.

I got to watch Schultz 1st game, he's awesome, very nice hands, very very nice shot.

Doesn't look like Gardiner though, game isn't as easy, and his defensive play/make up ability did not look like Jake's. Don't kid yourself about the Baron's PP either, despite having 3pts in the game last week (tying him for the AHL lead) he was not 1st nor 2nd star, that would be the Nuge & Eberle respectively.

Sami Vatanen & Justin Faulk are the dmen IMO in the AHL that (god forbid) if there is no NHL season will be the finalist with Jake Gardiner for Dman of the year. Honourable mentions to Schultz & Barberio. Only seen the 1 game from each, but I tell ya, Vatanen looks like NHL stuff. For those that don't know, he's ducks property once again, we need their d-man scout from the 07-11 years, guy doesn't miss!

I have no idea how anyone can call Jake's positioning 'looking lost', the guy has a complete read of the zone & is the stop on more plays then any Leaf dman -- just because he doesn't go stand next to someone doesn't mean he's unsure of what to do, LOL.

We have Gardiner, and should be thankful for that. Very good trade.

Schultz is likely to be a good one too, and will have the benefit of playing with some world class talent, certainly some offensive talent above what we have. With luck, and hard work, both should have great careers.

Ask me in two or three years which one I'd take.

Schultzy was better in Wisconsin and he's better now. It's not by much though and we're pretty lucky to have Gardsy playing for us. He makes us a lot better and in a couple years when Rielly arrives there's going to be a lot of mobility on the blueline

I wanted Shultz. but I had no idea we'd eventually draft Morgan Rielly. We really didn't need Shultz.

I would not say both are dominating the NHL. JS is dominating, and sits tied for #1 in points amongst all skaters. Gardiner is playing well, but not at the level of JS.

Congrats on 6k posts.

Both are doing well in the AHL right now. They still need to prove themselves amongst men (more).

Wonder how much of a factor RNH Hall and Eberle are to his point totals
