Guys keep it on topic. This isn't a thread about the future of the Rangers. It's about news around the league.

I agree. If you get a great offer for Gaborik, you have to take it.

Sounds like MSG east is moving about 30 minutes west.

Called it a long time ago. It just made sense. It's certainly better than moving to Kansas...

Why is Bettman attending this? He has more important things to do.

This commissioner is such a joke.

Brooklyn Islanders just doesn't have a nice ring to it.

(I have no problems with the Isles moving to Brooklyn, just commenting on the name.)

Moving the Isles away from its fan base doesn't make a whole lot sense to me.

They have to change the name. "Brooklyn" and "Islanders" don't make any sense.
Now if Brooklyn was an Island....

I was thinking the same thing. Just seems stupid on their part.

Gotta say I'm kinda upset. I live right down the road from the coliseum. Literally 10 minutes away. It's going to suck not being able to go to cheap games anymore.

Isn't Brooklyn on Long Island? I assume they'd keep the same name, NY Islanders.

Just they are playing in Brooklyn on Long Island instead of Uniondale, Long Island.

Yes, it still technically is Long Island. Like Montauk is the most Eastern part, Brooklyn is technically considered the most Western part of the island.

Not sure if this solves the Isles attendance problems. Fans now have to travel further, ticket prices will inevitably go up and the hope of drawing people from Manhattan, like the Devils found out when they moved to Newark, is unfounded.

There are 3 teams that are now way too close together. The Rangers, Islanders, Devils are all within 10 miles of each other. And being that most of NYC is Ranger fans, I can't see this working very well.

Brooklyn is not part of Long Island. Our mayor is Michael Bloomberg and we pay our taxes to the City of New York. We are NOT part of Long Island. Never have been. Never will be.

That's my point. They moved away from their fan base.

It's still on Long Island though, just because it's not NYC doesn't mean it's not on Long Island. NYC has 5 boroughs and they span more areas than just Manhattan.

There are now two NYC teams. One is in Manhattan and the other is on Long Island.

I think this has failure written all over it like the signing of alexei yashin and rick dipietro did.

You're points are completely spot on. The Islanders must be really banking on the allure of a brand new stadium to attract their fans. Because quite honestly they are not going to be converting rangers fans into islanders fans in that area. Its not like the Nets and the Knicks. Basketball in brooklyn is different than hockey. The Nets can and probably already have converted some knick fans. It also has to do with the fact that the knicks up until the last couple years struggled so dearly. And even when they've made it to the playoffs the quick 1st round exits haven't been too impressive considering all the money they've spent.

But even putting all that aside, like you said ticket prices will not be cheap anymore and they will have to travel a lot further to get to the games. The Islanders are not a winning team. They are a few years away. I guess they are praying that by the time they move in, they are relevant again. I don't know if playing in a new arena in Brooklyn will attract more free agents or now. Bottom line is Islanders fans weren't showing up when tickets were cheap and the Coliseum was smack in the middle of Nassau County; I don't see them showing up in Brooklyn when tickets are more expensive.
